Manchester City closed the gap on leaders Manchester United to seven points with a win that left Wigan rooted to the foot of the table.

City dominated possession, Wigan - with pace up front - always looked dangerous on the break and Despite City's control of the game, the best chance of the first half fell to Wigan with McCarthy blazing wide from 12 yards following Victor Moses' surge into the box.

Silva in plenty of space and following a slip by his fellow Spaniard Antonio Lopez, making his first Premier League start, Al Habsi's let the ball through his legs and it trickled in at the near post.

It was the 11th time this season Wigan have failed to score and they will have to find some cutting edge quickly if they are not to be relegated.

In fact the game was excellently summed up by Pearce who added: "Wigan were deserving of a second-half goal but it just didn't happen for them. It was a desperately disappointing affair."
