GYLFI SIGURDSSON could be offered Champions League football next season as the race to sign the Swansea City loan star steps up. Big-spending Spanish outfit Malaga want to lure Sigurdsson to La Liga where he would link up with Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. Malaga, bankrolled by billionaire Qatari Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nassar Al Thani, are currently fourth in Spain’s top-flight and on course for the Champions League. Reports in Spain claim they are ready to tempt Hoffenheim with a £6m-plus bid for Sigurdsson.

The news casts further doubt on whether Swansea will be able to secure a Liberty return for the midfielder who has been one of the Premier League’s top performers since arriving on loan in January. Sigurdsson’s value has rocketed following his seven goals in 14 outings for the Swans, with a list of suitors from throughout Europe courting him. The interest means Sigurdsson’s price could be driven up with Hoffenheim ready to play hard-ball over their £6.5m signing.

Head coach Markus Babbel told the Western Mail he is planning for next year’s Bundesliga with Sigurdsson in his team’s ranks. Former Germany and Liverpool defender Babbel insisted he has monitored Sigurdsson’s success at Swansea, which saw him named Premier League player of the month for March, and said: “I definitely know about Gylfi’s qualities as a football player and follow his strong performances in the Premier League. “And right at this moment we expect Gylfi to be back in Hoffenheim for the start of the training camp in June, according to his running contract.” - icWales

So there you have it, Like I've said before, this situation will end up a Borini issue, with too many complications for us, anyway you can read the rest of the article on the link below!............<ok>

This means nothing. I have stated that Siggy is happy here and has hinted tat he wants the clubs to talk. To me, that is a man set on moving here full time. If Malaga were to outbid us, it's still down to the player to accept terms, and he may be that set on the Liberty, could turn down any offer another club may give. I could be wrong, but I think he's in it for the football, not the massive wages. Could be proven wrong though.

Malaga......well i personally would jump at the chance if i was him......been to their ground and found it odd with one stand for the home supporters and its huge.....we will never compete with teams like that, ....newcastle or arsenal may but little old swansea dont have much chance. Its like sigg says ....its out of his hands....

Malaga are the ones most recently owned by Qatari's aren't they? Spending silly money on everyone? If he's in it for the football, he won't sign there...no matter how posh their one stand is!

who is in it for just the football though scott, its all about money and if it was just a couple of thousand pounds difference then maybe he would stay, the minuses we have are the £8.5 million transfer fee that will surely rise as the more clubs enter the race, the wages policy that i should not be broken as we pay good money for a club our size and finally the names of the clubs that want him.....i dont think we have a cats hell of a chance of signing him, i only hope that some of our own players who are under contract dont move if we get an offer that huw cant refuse,.....there are a few of our players who other clubs are interested in like dyer, taylor, leon, vorm, ash and sinclair....we are going to have to work hard and try and keep these players and if brendan goes then these players may fancy a move for the money....we have an interesting summer ahead of us i fear....

I think that, hard as they are to find, if you look properly you can find footballers who are willing to look more than one season in the future. Siggy is 22, has proven himself in 3 divisions already and clearly wants to play in the Premier League. I think he fancies a full season here, and why not with the Swans? If he goes back to Hoffenheim, despite Babbel's words, there's no guarantee he'll be in the team next season, and if he changes team in the PL there's no guarantee he'll fit that team's style/retain a place. At the Swans he knows he'll get a tidy wage, play football that suits (and flatters) him, and if a big club DOES come in in January next year/summer next year then we wouldn't stand in his way.

As has been said, if he doesn't want to sign for the Swans because of who we are then sod him, but I have a sneaky feeling he fancies it.

Contracts mean very little, that is why there are transfer fees to break said contracts.

With the Premier League prize money up to £800k per place and given the impact Siggy has had with us. I hope the club look at the situation and come to the conclusion that he's paid some of the transfer fee. what position we would have finished without him (okay its a team effort but he has helped us climb the table) therefore he would be paying 1/2 the transfer fee!!!!

you can pin all your hopes on sigurdsson staying loyal to swansea even though he's only played like 10 games, but the reality is that unless there is some sort of clause to sign him permanently (which there isnt as he's only at swansea to build up match fitness) hoffenheim will, if they decide to sell him, will simply sell him to the highest bidder, which certainly wont be swansea as he will be going for at least £10m.

dai is right and he will go to a club like newcastle, spurs, malaga etc, clubs with that sort of buying power.

Good to see we are starting to get a perspective on this, there's big money in charge at Malaga, and there's no big money here at Swansea, and until some obscure Welsh Billionaire living the other side of the world, takes over, we are small fry!........... <ok>

Guys, transfer fees mean nothing. If siggy doesn't want to go to malaga, toon, arsenal then the club can't force him. If we bid, its then down to the player so long as the club accept the bid.

Yes Terry mathews i think ??

Was apparently very peed off with the lack of help he received from the welsh assembly and cardiff buisness groups in his quest to put Wales on the map with the ryder cup, i cant remember exactly what it was over but im sure i remember him saying he would never invest anything into the Cardiff/Newport area ever again.
That pretty much makes Swansea top of his list if ever he wanted to annoy those people and seek revenge.

My memory is not good on this but im sure i read about it in the paper a few years back...or maybe it was just me trying to convince myself that we are the perfect city for his kind of vision and investment <laugh>
