An article in the Metro this morning says the FA are finally going to make kids play on smaller pitches from the 2014-15 season.

Now, I'm sure many of you are aware of the argument FOR this but I am yet to hear an argument AGAINST it. So my question is, anyone who knows anything about football and coaching kids is fully aware of the technical advantages of preventing kids playing on full size pitches - and from the 80s the Coerver training technique has been widely acknowledged and accepted - why in blazes has it taken the FA so long to make this decision ????

    The FA are totally inept.

This was something the FAW were meant to bring in 20+ years ago.I don't know if they ever did

Kids under say 12 shouldn't be expected to play, run, shoot at goal on full size pitches - its madness.

The playing time per half in matches should rise by 5 mins as they get older - start at 15 mins for u-7, 20 mins for u-9, 25 mins for u-11.
    30 mins for u-13, 35 mins for u-15 - then 45 mins.
Ideally have much smaller goal widths and heights up to say u-13.

Currently the big kids look more talented (!?) because they cope with the bigger pitches, and longer matches.
    Its all madness.

I used to play 40 min half's on a 75 yrd pitch up until the age of 16 - then full size pitches.

To be honest though, most training matches were 5-a-side, using each end of the pitch for two games, with coaches swapping players.

I've no idea what coaching kids are getting now. Didn't the Councils sell off the all the playing fields to build houses. My old school field is now a housing estate :(

In primary school we played on full size pitches. Bloody pointless. I remember having to toe punt a penalty because 12 yards as a nipper seemed too far to reach without the ball rolling. Toe punted it over the bar too <laugh>

My grandsons just 4 & 6 go to 'training' (laughable, I know) and after a bit of coaching <laugh> divide up to play a match.
the match is up to 30 mins each half. Ridiculous !! The 4 year old said to his dad 'I'm bored' - he didn't realise it was only half-time.

Hardly surprising. Wandering around a lot and rarely having the ball anywhere near them.

the uk really is behind the rest of europe in this sense, and the reason why countries like spain have players with much better technique.

if u manage to catch an under-13 match on spanish tv (occasionally shown, i've seen part of 1), u notice the pitches are tiny and they just pass it around like the pros. in the uk its hoofball until they can manage to pass on the big pitch

  12. This is great idea - now they dont have to run as far when they are all chasing the ball en masse.
