Fer is head and shoulders above the rest of our squad in terms of leadership heart, technical, ability, strength, awareness & power he has everything, Holt was a fine leader and Bassong seemed like a good replacement, sadly that idiotic gangster pose with a fire arm picture and a string of poor performances mainly down to injury has tarnished the reputation he achieved last year. Rusty is a great professional and a great guy but he is looking like a stunned rabbit lately and it doesn`t help team confidence, ask Ruddy. So do Canary not606ers think Leroy Fer would make a good captain?
Hmm not sure, it's not working with rusty /seb, but he's arguably our best player so his form might drop were Fer made el capitain
Given that I'm not sure either of Seb or Russ will start next week we will need another leader out there. I'd probably go for Johnny Howson as he's been captain before for Leeds but either of him or Leroy would be good. Permanently I doubt it will be changed this season unless a new manager comes in and wants to stamp their authority on the team.
If we were going to change, I would choose Snodgrass. He seems a massive character in the changing room and wears his heart on his sleeve on the pitch. Similar to Holt.
Not Snodgrass for me. Someone a bit more humble. I think Howson would be a good overall choice considering his contribution, he's done it before, and the position he plays.
Much as I like Fer and all of his attributes, I'm not sure that a 23 year old who has only played 12 matches so far is the way to go at the moment.
All the captain does at football is call heads or tails. All the players should be leaders and fighters.
My issue with picking a captain is that it has to be a player who is almost certainly going to start when fit. This is what made Bassong the correct choice until his recent run of form... I agree that Howson would be a good choice, but given his form has been up and down, I wonder whether that might look a poor choice if his form dips again. I agree with VC about Snodders' problems. On that basis, the only real choice in my book is Fer. A pitiful situation that epitomises our start to the season when our most consistent player has been a new signing who really should have been gently introduced to the league.
A new signing who is already fast becoming a fixture in the Netherlands squad - that's no mean feat surely? Think you're being a bit harsh there Rob, I personally think Leroy could turn out to be one of the very best players to wear the shirt, certainly in my time anyway.
Sorry, I didn't mean it that way - what I meant is that for most signings you hope (or should at least be prepared) to let them get gently used to the Premier League, whereas "poor old" Fer has only just arrived and yet has been lumbered with the hopes and expectations of many fans because he's probably the only player who's been consistent, when really the responsibility should have been taken by one or two of the older members of the squad. Fer totally deserves his place in the Netherlands squad, particularly as a result of how he has stepped up to the mark for us. I'm just saying he shouldn't have had to He could well be one of the best, I agree
How far can the lack of response and nuts trickle down?, if CH puts out a losing team we are within our rights to hold him accountable but McNally`s decision to terminate his contract seems a bit premature at the moment so we do nothing. Hughton has seen his captain Bassong struggle all season to the extent where he needed to be dropped, our club captain Russel Martin has shown a similar dip in form making our right side very weak so far. The captain does not just call the coin at kick off, he grabs the game by the scruff of the neck marshalls his defense, breaks up the opposition attacks and in some cases like Yaya, Fabregas, Viera and Pirlo etc consistently boss the game. Howson may be another good shout as he was Leeds united`s youngest captain and is another constant performer for us. Simply not doing anything is not good, we need a kick up the arse and if our captain can`t do it, our manager won`t do it then McNally is paid handsomely to do it. As someone stated recently Bassong and Martin may not feature against Palace so someone has to wear the armband, i hope Fer is going to be given a shot.. The good thing about sacking captains is the player is still there for selection, i remember a situation where Gallas was dropped as captain by Wenger and his form increased 10 fold as did Fabregas`s when replacing him. I agree, the whole captaincy think is totally overplayed in this country. I really couldn't care less who is Captain.
Partially agree; the only issue is that some players find it difficult to manage the perceived responsibility and focusing on their game- added pressure created largely by the player can be detrimental to form they try too hard
You need someone who is going to fire the team up on the pitch and encourage you to battle on when it's all going against you. I question the majority of our players leadership abilities and the fight at times certainly hasn't been there. Howson would be the most likely candidate for me but I can't see anyone dropping Mainwaring and Bassong from that duty.
