Chris Coleman hinted that both Joel Asoro and Josh Maja could be involved in Saturday’s clash with Reading as the Black Cats deal with James Vaughan’s suspension.

The young pair have long been heralded as future Sunderland stars and are in line to replace Vaughan after he picked up a fifth yellow card of the season celebrating his goal against Burton Albion on Saturday.

Asoro came on and made big impact from the bench in that game, setting up George Honeyman to score the Black Cats’ second goal.

Maja has missed the start of the season through injury, but dazzled during pre-season, scoring four times.

And Coleman has urged the pair to ramp up the pressure on the first team squad, and continue to provide healthy competition for places.

“Young Joel Asoro has done very, very well and he’s looked exciting,” Coleman told safc.com.

“It’s a bit different for Maja because he’s coming back from injury, but from what I’ve seen from him he looks promising and some of the other ones are also He added: “That’s good because it pushes the other players that have been here for a while because what you don’t want, and what you can’t have, is comfort.

“Comfort is death in sport, in football, so you need to look at who wants to be in that comfort zone and eradicate them and keep them away from the people who want to progress, work hard and be accountable.

“Hopefully they all want to buy into it and I hope that’s the case because they’ll all get the chance, but maybe one or two don’t and if that happens it’s up to us that they’re removed and we bring in the type of characters this football club deserves.

With Vaughan missing from the weekend, both players have the potential to be involved, either from the start or off the bench against the Royals.

Coleman is known for blooding young talent, giving the likes of Ben Woodburn and Harry Wilson opportunities in the Welsh senior squad.

And while he admits he will have to manage the pair carefully, he believes they can provide a ‘lift’ that Sunderland desperately need at the moment.

“Of course,” Coleman said when asked if they could replace Vaughan.

“They’re young – very young – but they’ve got promise and they’ve got potential, and they’ve also got all this excitement because they’ve not been professional footballers for too long and they’re not seasoned pros.”
“With that, you get a little vibe from them when you include them and I always do that because it’s nice to inject something different.

“Sometimes you get these bright-eyed young boys and it lifts everything, but you have to be careful and you can’t overcook it and allow them to be too overexposed.”

Hopefully both are on the bench along with Molyneux and Ethan Robson.

Think Embleton is ahead of both personally. Certainly having the best season of the 3 so far. He's turning heads. Performing above the level you'd expect for an 18 year old. He'll be knocking on the door for regular starts next season imo. Possibly this season if Coleman is good with youth.

Sweet tooth? Heres a Jam Roly poly recipe...

    Ingredients
50g salted butter, cold and cut into chunks, plus extra for greasing
250g self-raising flour, plus extra for rolling
1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out
    50g shredded suet
150ml milk, plus a drop more if needed
100g/4oz raspberry or plum jam, or a mixture
    custard, to serve
    Method
    1. Put a deep roasting tin onto the bottom shelf of the oven, and make sure that there’s another shelf directly above it. Pull the roasting tin out on its shelf, fill two-thirds with boiling water from the kettle, then carefully slide it back in. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Tear off a large sheet of foil and greaseproof paper (about 30 x 40cm). Sit the greaseproof on top of the foil and butter it.

    2. Tip butter, flour and vanilla seeds into a food processor; pulse until the butter has disappeared. Tip into a mixing bowl. Stir through the suet, pour in the milk and work together with a cutlery knife until you get a sticky dough. You may need a drop more milk, depending on your flour.

    3. Tip the dough out onto a floured surface, quickly pat together to smooth, then roll out to a square roughly 25 x 25cm. Spread the jam all over, leaving a gap along one edge, then roll up from the opposite edge. Pinch the jam-free edge into the dough where it meets, and pinch the ends roughly, too. Carefully lift onto the greased paper, join-side down (you might find a flat baking sheet helpful for this), loosely bring up the paper and foil around it, then scrunch together along the edges and ends to seal. The roly-poly will puff quite a bit during cooking so don’t wrap it tightly. Lift the parcel directly onto the rack above the tin and cook for 1 hr.

    4. Let the pudding sit for 5 mins before unwrapping, then carefully open the foil and paper, and thickly slice to serve.

I love that you always have info on the young uns, it’s always an area I can’t keep up with.

I’m excited to see Asoro get a chance, by all accounts he is viewed as a potential star far beyond us, Arsenal, PSG and Juve all wanted him.

I wanna see what he’s all about, some impressive highlights reels etc but they don’t show the whole footballer.

So you’d say Maja is closer to ready? Was doing great preseason before the knock.

It's cause the seniors are so crap the young uns have been consistently better for ages. They play as a team, I just wish there was more live streams instead of highlights all the time. But once moved I'll have a car running so I'll be trying to get to as many as I can.

Luke Molyneux is looking a bright tallant too, more of an Attacking Mid though. With Gooch and Honeyman about it will be difficult for him to get a foot in the door but he's still only 19 so plenty of time. Ethan Robson needs to be pushing on now but it hasn't really happened for him. He's 21 and not close to breaking the first team, needs a spell on loan desperately that lad along with Greenwood. They're both at the age where they need games against Seniors and let's face it, they're miles from getting that with us. Hopefully Coleman embraces the loan system. Lot of young uns really needing that move now.

Asoro has wide forward written all over him imo, he's not a natural finisher and I think he'll bring more from out wide coming in.

Coleman is fearless in giving young lads a game, we’ve seen that with Wales, have Woodburn his debut in a massive, pressure cooker game.

Yeah i reckon so. He more than matched lower league players 10 years his senior physically in preseason.
Asoro will be good to come off the bench against tired legs I think until he develops more.

Yep, it's harder when you're in trouble but glad they'll be getting more chances. Embleton is the boy at the moment. He and Asoro are our wonder kids. They've fast tracked every level. Both should still be playing u18s but thanks to fast development they're well on their way.

Interesting. I’ve heard Embleton mentioned but not as glowingly. I’ll see if I can find any clips.

He's a big lad with a great touch, his physique is absolutely perfect for a footballer, he's already big enough to physically combat old experienced center halves which obviously makes him a viable first team option. Just waiting for him to fully recover from injury and how well he recovers. He'll be ahead of Asoro this season but I think Asoro will end up a better player.
