LONDON (Reuters) Swansea City's interim manager Garry Monk vented his frustration at referee Lee Probert after the official denied the Premier League strugglers a chance of a last-gasp winner over Arsenal at the Emirates on Tuesday. Probert blew for full-time just as Jonathan de Guzman homed in on goal behind the Gunners' defence, leaving Swansea's visiting fans, the team and manager Monk furious despite a late own goal earning the Welsh side a valuable 2-2 draw. "I have told the referee I think it's a very poor decision. I don't understand it," the manager told reporters. "I am not saying we are definitely going to score but he was going to be clean through. "I have never had something like that in all the games I have played in. Normally they blow the whistle when the ball is in a neutral area." Swansea are 15th in the 20-team league, five points above the drop zone, and a victory would have moved them two places higher in the standings. Monk's anger was based on the fact his side equalised right on the 90th minute, and so the referee should have extended the four minutes of added time already calculated. "They told us it was going to be four minutes at the end of the game. We score in that period so they add an extra minute on, so it's five minutes minimum - and I stress the word minimum," he said. "Then we are clean through on goal, 99 percent sure a goal-scoring opportunity is going to come, and they blow 30 seconds short." - Ossian Shine (Reuters) MY VIEW? THIS CAN ONLY MEAN THE REF DID NOT WANT US TO SCORE, NO OTHER REASON SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO BOOK, IDIOT REFEREE'S LIKE PROBERT ARE MESSING THIS LEAGUE UP.
Sounds about right, referee's do little things to distort the league in favour of the money teams. They get the penalty calls and they get the crap like additional time when it suits. Who remembers United's mysterious extra nine minutes to score a winning goal?
He is running the line at Liverpool tonight and got an offside wrong. Referees are a joke. They have to be accountable. A Rugby Ref would have been wired up and would have had to explain his decision. What with the MARINER cock up and all, the premier league need to wise up and enter the 21st century instead of counting their money in their glass palace's.
I hope football doesn't become anything like a borefest rugby game! To constantly have videos to confirm every thing just makes it painfully slow! I'd rather have controversy in the game!
I have to disagree with you there. What if it were a controversial decision that got us relegated that could have been easily corrected in seconds by the fourth official with a monitor? There is absolutely no excuse for it now.
Video replays in rugby add to the excitement and tension of the game. They also ensure that nobody gets screwed over. Also by the time football players spit their dummies out and bitch and moan at refs, rugby decisions are then decided using the 4th official.
I have to disagree there sorry! It will turn more people off than On! If every contentious decision was questioned and referred to a TV then that would slow the game down massively! I watch football for entertainment and controversy in the game to me is entertaining and makes the game more exciting!
So we drew with Palace because of a poor penalty decision which gave them an equaliser, and you would rather that happen and we end up with 1 point instead of the 3 rather than spend 30 seconds for the ref to look at a video to see that the foul occurred outside the box?
Does anyone ever remember the whistle being blow with a player bearing down on goal , something just smells wrong with this call. That being said I'm with swan and only, stopping the game will ruin the flow of the game.By all means take appropriate action after the fact toward the ref , but thats it.
What I don't get is the 4 minutes injury time was up while arsenal were attacking and he didn't blow, as soon as we were through on goal he did
Agree Black, after the Lampard controversy against Germany at the last World Cup, it's criminal it's taken so long for goal line technology to be introduced. Technology would also help avoid the farce that was the Arsenal sending off last week and the dubious penalty that followed. By the time the games restart because of players challenging decisions, 4th officials could double check and start games quicker.
playing the Devils Advocate I think I read Monk wanted an extra minute added on because we scored - why?
We also scored in the 90th minute therefore an extra minute should have been added. Musty when we scored, that extra minute should have been added. Can bet your life if that was Carzola with the ball at the end the ref would have allowed the shot at goal.
I would love to see the rule re time added on for what circumstances and how much time for each eg goals, subs etc
Agree. It's very intriguing that smaller clubs get screwed by officials when the top clubs need a goal in the last minutes and that the same refs don't allow time for smaller clubs when chasing equalisers/winners. Not that I'm suggesting anything underhanded happens of course
Well I'm suggesting it. In my opinion the game is corrupt and decisions are made to benefit the bigger clubs. I know your last sentence was tongue in cheek, Valley, but the whole thing just sickens me. Referees and officials are supposed to be placed on a pedestal and regarded as holier-than thou. For me, most of them are cheats. The football authorities must think we are idiots and the disrespect they show smaller clubs and their supporters totally sucks.
Strong comments that Ivor, and I don't disagree with your assessment at all. Just annoys me so much when you see decisions go the way of a big team but the smaller teams get sod all. Even worse when big teams are at home and god forbid a ref giving a penalty to the opposition at Stamford Bridge, OT etc. Look at Chelsea when the got a pen against WBA and it wasn't a pen. Officials now I think love the limelight and being the centre of attention. My fav ref was always Roger Millford, you could always have a good laugh with him and he was always fair.
Does very much seem like that Ivor, the sooner some of these decisions can be overruled with the 4th official the better!..............
