Jamie Mackie on target in behind-closed-doors friendly against the Royals … QPR Under 21s lose 4-2 in friendly against Reading Jamie Mackie scored as he stepped up recovery from hamstring injury Darnell Furloing also on target for QPR JAMIE Mackie came through 63 minutes of action and marked his first appearance in three months with a goal, but he couldn’t stop QPR’s Under 21s going down 4-2 in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Reading on Wednesday afternoon. Played at the Royals’ Hogwood Park training ground, QPR got off to the worst possible start, falling two behind in the opening six minutes. Paulo Hurtado opened the scoring in the second minute from close range before Harry Cardwell doubled the hosts lead from eight yards. The R’s got themselves back into the match with a fine header from Darnell Furlong on the half-hour mark but Reading restored their two-goal lead just before the break with an Aaron Tshibola penalty. Ten minutes after the restart, Mackie, stepping up his recovery, slid the ball home after fine inter-play with Massimo Luongo, but Rangers were unable to draw level, and were caught on the break in the closing stages, with Jack Stacey neatly finishing to wrap-up the scoring five minutes before the final whistle. Aside from Mackie’s return following his spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury sustained at Fulham in September, this afternoon also saw starts for Samba Diakite, Luongo, Michael Doughty, Michael Petrasso, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Reece Grego-Cox. But the game had barely started when Reading took the lead, R’s keeper Joe Lumley stopping an initial shot from the left, but only palming the ball into the path of Hurtado, who tapped home. And Cardwell made it 2-0 moments later after a good ball in from the left, which he coolly slotted into the back of the net. Despite the disappointing start, Rangers went on to dominate much of the first half. Emmanuel-Thomas created a chance for himself on the right, beating two men before seeing his shot from a tight angle well saved. Moments later, Mackie’s low drive was blocked while Emmanuel-Thomas headed wide from six yards following a great free-kick by Doughty. But Rangers didn’t have to wait too much longer before halving the deficit. Luongo’s corner from the left was superbly met at the near post by Furlong – playing at centre-back with Diakite – and the ball flew into the roof of the net, despite the best efforts of the Royals keeper. Emmanuel-Thomas then saw his shot from distance tipped over the bar before another effort from the former Bristol City man was pushed around the post after good work by Petrasso on the left flank, as QPR looked to draw level. But on the stroke of half-time, the hosts were awarded a heavily-disputed penalty following a goalmouth scramble, which saw Mackie and Emmanuel-Thomas both battling for possession. Tshibola powered the ball home from 12 yards to send the Royals in at the break 3-1 up. Watched by Director of Football Les Ferdinand, manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, assistant manager David Oldfield and first team coach Dirk Heesen, QPR started the second half strongly. Mackie was moved up top, with Grego-Cox now playing on the right flank, and within ten minutes the former Reading man made it 3-2. Mackie and Luongo cleverly exchanged a double one-two, before the former slid the ball home from 12 yards. Doughty went close to levelling matters with a stunning drive from 25 yards which cannoned off the far post, but in the end Rangers were unable to find the equaliser, and in the closing stages the hosts made it 4-2, Stacey calmly beating Lumley following a great throughball which got him in behind the R’s defence. QPR: Lumley; Kakay (Comley, 83), Diakite, Furlong, Trialist; Petrasso (Wise, 70), Doughty, Luongo (N’Guessan, 63) Mackie (Rosenthal, 63); Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Reece Grego-Cox.
