This is a friendly enquiry about an old BBC 606 poster, who most of you should know, like me, with fond affection. Nothing else
Ensil you are out of date on that. It has now been established beyond doubt that all dogs are descended from wolves.
I am interested in dogs, I love them. Have you ever read about the experiment in Russia with selective breeding in Siberian foxes? Fascinating stuff.
Belyaev Experiment I think it is called, it's still going now. It's about the effects of selectively breeding 'favourable' traits, to create domesticated foxes. Points of particular interest are the foxes change colour not only in their behaviour but their tails and coats too. Of course in a controlled experiment, there is also the counter data to observe, so foxes are also selected for aggression also
I once saw a programme that was about mixing of animal genes and animal and human genes. The programme depicted a boy with the eyes of a vulture which would make him see for 9 or 10 miles which a vulture can do. It might be worthwhile for some referees to have the op done. Could be done with dogs too.
I was wondering if there was anything that you wouldn't argue about, to be honest! How about religion or politics? <run, runandrunsomemoresmiley>
Totally with you on that Spurf, the ammunition in the following paragraphs any reply Ensil? Dogs and wolves can freely interbreed and produce fertile offspringâeven little dogs like Westies and Chihuahuas are capable of this! This is a dramatic indication that dogs and wolves are very closely related and are compatible in terms of genetics (incompatible animals do not produce viable, fertile offspring, such as donkeys and horses. Their offspringâthe muleâis a sterile animal.). The genes for different coat colors, lengths, conformations, and structural differences are present in the wolf population to a certain degree (otherwise wolves would not have been able to give rise to the different dogs we have today. In order for a phenotypic change to occur, there has to be a genetic basis off which to work. If the genes are not there, then the phenotypic change is not going to "magically" occur), but are selected against by nature because they are not advantageous to wolf survival. Humans are the ones that manipulated the breedings to "create" smaller dogs and dogs of varying colors, shapes, and sizes. Lastly, dogs have recently been reclassified as Canis lupus familiaris by the Smithsonian Institute (Wayne, R.K. "What is a Wolfdog?" www.fiu.edu/~milesk/Genetics.htm), placing it in the same species as the gray wolf, Canis lupus. The dog is, by all scientific standards and by evolutionary history, a domesticated wolf (Feldhamer, G.A. 1999. Mammology: Adaptation, Diversity, and Ecology. McGraw-Hill. pg 472.).
Thanks for posting that coyspurs it puts the wolf firmly to bed with the dogs. Let's hope Spurs can liberate their dogs of war when we meet Wolves again.
