Pompey Academy collected their first point of the new Merit League One campaign with a 1-1 draw at Luton.

Gabriel Kamavuako teed-up Harry Jewitt-White to open the scoring late in the first half, but Jacob Pinnington levelled for the hosts shortly after the break.

Assistant professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “It was a good performance overall and a draw is probably the fair result.

“Our goal started from a throw and we showed some nice patterns to work the ball to Gabriel, who set the ball back for Harry to finish.

“It was almost a carbon copy of some of the plays we’d worked on in training and that was pleasing to see.

“We’ve got a lot of midfielders out injured and we were facing a strong Luton team, so it was good for Harry to come in from the first team and get 90 minutes.

“We were happy to limit a team who had netted 84 times in their side of the Youth Alliance League to just one goal.

“There were periods when we suffered without the ball, but we defended and duelled really well. The lads showcased our club values and the staff were proud of them.

“Having played with a three for much of the season, it’s good to see our back four improving week after week.

“We also had our moments with the ball – both on the counter-attack and also through building up the play.

“There was perhaps a lack of intensity in our press at times and that’s something to reflect on, although it’s possibly a consequence of facing the Navy in midweek and a few tired legs.

“On the whole, though, we dealt with Luton’s direct play and their midfield diamond. The midfield duelled well, both individually and collectively.

“The only thing to really look at was our play in possession, but we were happy with the overall display against one of the best category three sides we’ll face.”

Pompey: Bastian Smith; Brian Quarm, Josh Dockerill, Jack Fox, Harvey Laidlaw; Koby Mottoh, Gabriel Kamavuako (Keteku 70), Adam Payce (Elliott Simpson 89), Harry Jewitt-White; Destiny Ojo, Jamie Howell
