Despite the words of the late, great Bill Shankly, football is not more important than matters of life and death. Of course, the great man had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he said it, but it's amazing how many people seem to act as though his words were true. From the degree and amount of venom hurled at Suarez from all quarters, you'd be forgiven for thinking the guy had committed a series of heinous crimes, rather than just some rather silly acts of gamesmanship on a football pitch. Nobody seems capable of even mentioning a football- related misdemeanour without dragging his name into it. I think he's God's Gift to Football. All those people harbouring a vague, unfocussed hatred towards all things Liverpool now have something to rationalize and justify their vitriol; the morons at the FA have found an unwitting patsy for their anti- Blather crusade; and all the useless media hacks have had some nice, sensationalist, xenophobic copy handed to them on a plate. LFC, meanwhile, have got an outstanding footballer. Everyone's a winner.
Little Luis is far from being a saint; however, he is fashionable to villify at the moment. He brought some of it on himself but a large part is undeserved. I wish he would behave better but he is no Joey Barton.
Top thread. Suarez is a God amoungst men, permission should be asked before anyone even attempts to tackle him, diving is his divine right.
I'm happy he plays for my team, unplayable on his day and he's probably the best all-round striker we've had in a long time. And the pure fact that everyone else 'hates' him just makes it all the sweeter.
Just saying teams have them. Easy to label all that at Suarez when United's King had just a many problems on and off the pitch as Suarez.
I have no problem in agreeing that Cantona committed assault on that prat that night. The courts also agreed. Brilliant he was but also a little crazy. However OP made the accusation that Suarez was only guilty of Gamesmanship and nothing more. Hardly accurate. Also don't compare Suarez with Eric. Suarez will never reach those heights.
Just saying, you guys obviously ( mostly I think at least) love Cantona because of that maverick side and that unpredictability. Same with us and Suarez. At least Suarez doesn;t wear his collar up like a puff......
Also by the time that Cantona got to Leeds he was what 25-26? Same age as Suarez is now, so hopefully Suarez can get us to those dizzying heights and trophy haul but only time will tell.
Suarez is a very talented footballer, but a loathsome character. He's reaping what he's sown in terms of who people perceive him.
Love how people perceive him as a loathsome character, without knowing anything he does off the pitch...
Hmmm.. I think you've missed my point entirely. I was saying that everybody loves having him here, even if it's because they love to hate him. There are plenty of other threads discussing his relative merits, that wasn't my purpose.
