So do you all think that (as much as I love Luca Modric) it is time for him to move on now if we can raise between 30 and 40 million for him I say thanks and good luck mate. Get in two or three quality players a midfield player and two strikers (not including Ade who I think we should get signed up nice and quick!). Sell a few of our dead wood like Gomes, jenas,Bentley , I would still keep faith if he can stay fit with huddlestone and I think things are looking alright !
If we could get £35+ then i'd say yes. £30m is too cheap. Moutinho looks like a decent replacement and AVB has worked with him before. £20m Then £10m on Ade (£5m +£5m signing on is what has been rumoured). I'd then go for a player that can play upfront and also cover one of the wings. I think Remy could do that, or someone cheaper like Moses.
Losing Luka is gonna be a massive blow. Regardless of how much money we get we'll never get a like-for-like replacement. Naturally with the money, we'll get some top draw talent to add the squad/ first team but it doesn't take away the fact we've lost arguably our best player in recent years. If I had the choice of selling Luka for £40m and bringing in the 3 very good players or keeping him and not adding to the squad, I'd choose keeping Luka all day long. I'd sell the deadwood as you say though, that'd mean we could fund moves for players who'll add real competition for places. With Levy at the helm, we could definitely generate a pretty penny for the likes of Gomes, Jenas, Bentley, Pienaar, Bassong plus any others.
I don't think Luca can be easily replaced, so people should be careful about what they wish for. The problem is not the amount of money, I'm sure that as a purely business deal we could make a very good deal and bank a tidy profit. The problem is getting a guaranteed first team starter as a replacement. We can sight a number of players that might exceed Luca in any one department, but none I think (that we could realistically get) who could do the same job. In other words, before you know it you need to play 13 players!
The fact that AVB has immediately come out with an admission that Moddy is likely to leave seems to put the seal on the fact that he'll be gone by the start of next season. But the fact that Levy was content for AVB to make those noises tells me that Levy/AVB are working on Moddy's replacement, and i suspect that it will be someone who will be of equal quality. I'm ambivalent about Moddy leaving. Yes, he was undoubtedly the best technical player at the Lane for many years, but, no, he simply did not score enough goals for us, or get enough assists. Had he something else in his locker, such as a dead-ball specialization, I'd be more concerned than I am about losing him.
I think he's basically gone, already. It's a shame to lose such a good player, but that's just the economic position that we're in, I'm afraid. If we bring in Moutinho, then I think that the damage from this loss will be minimized. Not only will we have a decent replacement in a similar mould, but we'll have an important figure that already knows Villas-Boas' system and backs him, too. Getting everyone moving in the same direction and getting behind the manager could be key early on.
I agree. Modric is a wonderful talent, but he's definitely replaceable (to an extent). In my opinion, if Bale were to leave, it would have been a whole lot worse. I'd rather have a team of chimps, than a team of rats!
Totally agree HIAG. Some comments suggest that Modric is too hard to replace. - with that in mind, does that mean that some think he's one of the best midfielders in the world? only a player of such calibre is of such a difficulty to replace. when receiving that volume of cash from sale, there are plenty of options for us. £40 odd mill opens up so many doors. Yes, Luka will be missed, but he can be replaced, even if that someone is of a different style and things change a bit. If those of you honestly believe he's one of the best midfielders in the world, then fair enough. But I believe his game still lacks certain elements to put him in that category. Therefore I feel comfortable that with the funds available and the wage cap increased, we can find someone to fill his boots.
I got the impression, from AVB's comments, that Luka wants to go (most likely to Madrid) but knows we can only sell him if we have a replacement. He'll be a loss but replaceable. We're lucky to be a good team as a whole than a one / two man team.
He's replaceable imo, but we need to do it SOON. Luka at the moment is the heartbeat of the team and often transitions us from defence to attack. The rest of the team need a decent amount of preseason to adapt to someone else being in this role or a different system
I think we need to sell him, we have got to have a team that is all pulling in the same direction. This is the 2nd summer that he has wanted to get away so i say just let him move on as long as we have the right replacement lined up.
Sad to lose him as all top teams keep their best players. Another up coming player may be bought but will we retain him when he reaches his peak ? On a positive note AVB is saying we are going for the title than Harry,s, we go for the top 4 and you never had it so good.
Everyone going on about shifting the deadwood. Its not going to happen. It never happens. Jenas has been floating around like a fart in a lift for years, and nobody in their right mind is going to pay Bentleys wages, especially at the lower end of the table clubs he's more likely to end up at. Saying that though, Luka is good, but he's no Gazza, there's always another player out there, and hopefully those players are more aesthetically pleasing. Like Corluka
noooooooooooooooooooo! Not this again. We need to clone vdv is that's what you're going for. Who is that youth chap we have coming through. Creative mid, not Tom Carroll. Anyone?
A mate said to me that he wouldn't fit in at Utd or the Chavs and I agree. it's Madrid for him and yes he can go.
May have been Pritchard. Not the first 2. I was just wondering whether he might get some game time this year if Modders does leave. It would be a bit harsh to try to have him replace Modders but i've heard good things and was wondering how far away (or if) he is from first team squad?
I'd love for him to stay. However, there's little point in trying to cling on to a demotivated player who wants to be elsewhere. I still believe that Levy will play hardball on this one, so I wouldn't go counting any chickens yet. If the requisite deal is not forthcoming, he may well not be going anywhere.
exactly...as good as he is..i would always have a problem with anyone who plays in such a pivotal role for us but does not score much at all or does not assist as many as he should be..therefore i think he can be replaced..and will be adequatly...plus the guy does not seem passionate about Spurs..therefoe i have a problem being passionate about him. i mean how many players can join trophy winning teams every single season? there are only a handful of teams in each league that win things and not eveyone suffering from illusions of grandeur can join them...hang on ive just had an idea..since these players are so good..why dont they help their current teams become big instead of joining a bandwagon and living off others hard work...hence..even if i miss him ill never admit it...bye bye Luka. p.s...i should not say bye bye Luka as i dont even think Madrid want him..why would they want him when they have Ozil and Khedira to a lesser extent...so its win win for us i think..as if we do reluctantly sell to an english club it will be for a huge amount....think the club has got him over a barrell..good stuff Levy.
