TEAM NEWS

Cardiff will be without captain Mark Hudson (ankle) for the visit of Derby County, the centre-back having missed Saturday's defeat at Middlesbrough.
Youngster Ben Nugent could come in after impressing at Middlesbrough as a substitute as the league leaders look to get back to winning ways.
Derby will be without Jamie Ward as the striker picked up a hip injury during Friday's game against Crystal Palace.
Midfielder Michael Jacobs could come in. Will Hughes (groin) remains absent.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• Cardiff are looking to increase their unbeaten streak against Derby to six matches with a fifth straight home league victory over them.
• The Bluebirds have won twice as many league games against Derby as they have lost (W26, D14, L13).
• Derby came from behind to draw the reverse fixture 1-1 with a 69th-minute goal from Theo Robinson, cancelling out Heidar Helguson's early opener just six minutes after Cardiff had Craig Noone sent off.
• The Rams are chasing a first win in seven visits to the Welsh capital, following a 2-0 triumph in September 2004.

Cardiff City

• Cardiff may have won more matches than any other club in the Championship (22), but Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough was their second loss in three outings and reduced their lead at the top of the table to five points.
• Since the second flight was last restructured 17 seasons ago, the lowest points total with which a club has gained automatic promotion is 79; Cardiff are nine shy of that mark.
• Malky Mackay's side have amassed an unrivalled 40 of their 70 Championship points at home, and only conceded 11 goals in the 16 outings at the City of Cardiff Stadium.

Derby County

• Derby have slipped back into the bottom half of the table courtesy of a six-match winless run, in which just three points have been picked up.
• Nigel Clough's side could fall to three successive league defeats for the first time this season.
• The Rams have played five of the top six away already and have lost all five. They have only notched three victories on the road, the most recent coming at Bristol City on 15 December.

must win match this, i think people will start panicking if we dont get the 3 points today, all championship matches are on today so we'll have one eye on what goes on elsewhere.

clough has said we are nailed on for promotion, but to be honest i think this is more a mind game than a complement. even if we win, hull could win and it'd still be a gap of only 5, so we cant get complacent.....

That's because there is important news today about the Welsh rugby team selection. You live in Wales remember.

Anyone think Lappin might make the bench tonight?

Taff!
Can you bung this thread into TMM's match thread m8. <ok>

The first sign of madness is talking to yourself, the second sign is answering back. <yikes> No offence meant ITI. Don't want to upset you. <whistle>

Derby have been whipping boys at our place in recent years, not having beaten us in Cardiff since September 2004. The "Young Man" has not done very well here. I just hope tonight is not the night that changes.

At least it looks like that little goal hanging Muppet Jamie Ward will not be playing although Connor Salmon may be a handful for our centre backs. I guess Nugent will start alongside Turner and McNuggs on the bench at best on the basis we don't have any other right backs apart from the youngster, Coulson, in the Development Squad. Probably too early for him to come in although Nugent hasn't done badly.

The question for me is, will Malky make any other changes further forward such as bringing in Mutch or Cowie alongside Gunnar to play in front of the back four and pushing Whitts up to just behind the front two, leaving either Noone or Conway outwide and Bellers and Campbell up front?

Probably not and will stick to the same shape as normal with 2 out of Conway, Noone and Smith to play wide midfield and Mutch and/or Cowie on the bench.

Bluey - I can't see Malky changing Whitt's role. As invisible as he can seem sometimes, he's a vital steadying influence in front of the back 4.

I wouldn't rule out Smithy on the bench tonight and Malky playing two "proper" wide men in Conway and Noone, with Bellers and Campbell spearheading up front. That is some serious pace that will trouble any back 4.

The two Bens must start at CB with Connolly and Tayls out wide. I've said before that I like the look of Coulson at RB in the same way as Declan on the left - just think Malky will spurn anything risky an stick with experience to see us through.

Who should join Whitts in the middle of the park? No way should Gunnar sit out any of the remaining games unless he breaks a leg - and he'd probably still want to sta t then!!

No Bellamy, (need to change my prediction quick) slight niggle. win needed tonight, Palace/Hull to draw, Watford draw.

Would have prefered Mason instead of HH. (bound to score now).

Sounds pretty open which should suit us.

also, palace and hull can't both win. A good night for us to pick up 3 points.
