<peacedove>In fairness, Lovren played well against City yesterday, but Shako is going to be fit
against Burnley on Wednesday. Do you play Lovren or Shako against Burnley?

Great topic and i had thought of this after the city game.

Lovern has come in and played decently. Has rodgers the balls to drop the guy for sahko who really should play...

OR would he move can to accommodate both?

This will be interesting for me... the question you pose is would I... well the answer to that is Sahko but woudl rodgers? the answer is I don't know what he'll do.

Get his name right, guys. :)

Lovren has had a nightmare first season with us so far. Hopefully he can put it behind him and start to show some form.
Sakho would be clear first choice for me atm, but I'm worried about him being injury-prone and we need someone decent to step in.

I still get very nervous watching Lovren play out from the back....to be fair the same can be applied to Migs.

So Sahko for me.....but it's only fair to recognise Lovren's much improved performances in a back 3......

    i agree.

For me we have two players in the current set up in Skertl and lovern that are basically the two guys who should compete together. neither are all that on the ball.

if we play a 3 at the back shako is best player by a mile for LCB. Can is best by a long way for RCB.

Lovren was fine defensively yesterday. He's still not comfortable on the left though and it showed with his contribution which was average (although did hit a couple of nice long passes and after that seemed to get his confidence back)

it also doesn't help him being on the wrong side when he tackles as he tackles with his right but that's on the wrong side when going down the line..

if Sakho isn't 100% then wouldn't feel too concerned with Lovren playing but Sakho has been the better player when fit so far

yes he was but city made it easy for us. he still did well.

I agree that left side of 3 is too far to left for him. RCB or CB is where he'd be aimed at but remember this guy is 25... skertl is 30. I think lovern can displace skertl in the end.

25 is actually young for a CB and at 30 skertl is probably at his personal peak of experience and ability to get about.

IMO its scoring that concerns me most v burnely not the back 3.

I agree, Sterling is not a natural goal scorer and Sturridge seems to want about 5 touches too many! Long may our midfield goal scoring run continue! <ok>

(when was the last time that we scored from a corner btw? - we may as well not bother!! <laugh>)

sturridge is nowhere near fit yet IMO. not match sharp IMO

our last corner was the one skertl got I think....

Not sure but we've not got many. lovern might have got one a long time back

The thing about 3 CBS formation is we should be doing a lot better..

    BUT.....

allen... couldn't kick it as far as a 10 year old.... lallna is as bad...

Seriously how hard is it to learn to deliver a whipped corner to the near/middle/far post..

honestly how ****ing hard... especially at home where the size should be as familiar as possible.

This is no debate. Sakho is the best centre back at this club, and arguably the best in the league.

There is no way he can be displaced.

And big credit to Lovren - missing that penalty could have destroyed him but he defended well. His passing was atrocious and it puts players under pressure, but I've always said a defenders first, second and third job is to be able to defend.

  12. Who is 'Shako'...?

No contest IMO, Sakho every single day of the week!!!

<laugh> Guaranteed to make me chuckle on a monday morning JS <ok> Fair to say there is at least SOME debate to be had about that rather ambitious statement.

They could both play and push Can up into the middle. As long as we have another midfield option on the bench we can then always drop Can back if Lovren isn't performing. As I said a few weeks ago Lovren has to be given the chance to improve (Rodgers needs to know if he will settle into the defence given a bit of confidence), Burnley at home would be strange game to drop him for.

    no-one at the back.

but the point is not to drop shako but what do you do with others to bring back in Sahko

    options:

    1. Say exactly as is for burnely... result sahko is benched

    2. Go back to Can, Skertl, Sahko.... result lovern benched and may feel bad (bless i know)

    3. Play lovern, skertl, Sahko. Result? either can gets dropped or someone else does

So... in option 3... it seems quite logical to think hey... allen, markovic? just for exmaple.

For me I'd go probably with option 2 this midweek and then play option 3 with can benched in FA cup.

Why don't we move our ready made CM playing at RCB and have them both in? Let's be honest, Can is wasted at CB no matter how well he's performing, Lovren doesn't deserved to be dropped, give him a run of games, move Can in to midfield. Only problem is, we can't really drop Joe Allen either!

^^ This. Lovren and Sakho both in the back line for me. Can pushed into his favoured position to maraud at will. Lovren had a decent game yesterday, reward him and give him an incentive and hopefully he can finish the season strong and convince us not to sell him

If it goes tits up swap Lovren and Can around <whistle>

Next season we will have a back three of:

    Illori-Sakho-Lovren

    Quote me on that.

I woudn't move Can out of defence.

We have improved massively because of Can and Sakho. Not only are they good defenders, but their ability to pass from the back is what makes us dangerous.

We saw how Lovren hoofed the ball or played poor passes to Moreno, and it causes panic and puts us on the back foot.

If we have Skrtel and Lovren, we have two defenders who cannot pass.

Keep Can in defence until we get a defender who can play the ball with ease.

Also in the long run, I would like to see Can as the centre of the back 3. He will be less exposed defensively, and he'll have freedom to pick the ball up and to also join the midfield. I think it could be a very good role for him.
