How are we going to wrap Simon Eastwood up in enough cotton wool to make sure he doesn't get injured ??

If he gets sent off/injured- I guess we'd have to put a defender in goal!! <yikes>

Maybe we can ask Saints about the availability of the "Pie-eater", a.k.a Lambert.

If we could get him, and put him in goal- he'd fill up most of the net, so no need for any defence :p

lambert would be a good shout, proved he's good with his hands last night!

I personally don't have a problem with eastwood, he's exactly the sort of player we should be using at this level with our budget.
Just the short contracts are a worry, because a few good games could get them a deal else where.

Just put a kid on the bench and tough it out till january. If you subsequently lose Eastwood, then you'll be able to get another keeper

The argument is, since we can only have 20 players registered, having players from our youth squad on the bench take up places which could be used by older mercenaries, er I mean professionals. However, since we're **** with these players, we may as well just play our youth squad anyway.

Can someone tell me what a mercenaries is ??

And that's a bit harsh on the players, Lapras. They've had no stability in the squad- a managerial change, probably against their will, and no long-term contract at the club, so there's no need to perform for a spot. They can leave whenever they want.

So in fairness, I think we should back the team. I see your viewpoint Lapras, we have dissapointed these past few games- but you win some you lose some. We went on a good run, stuttered these past few games- but hopefully we'll rack up the points again soon, after the morale boosting draw last weekend.

    PUP <ok>

Careful PL Stewie, some Saints fans get annoyed if you draw attention to Rickie's large girth <ok>

I think you have got away with it so far..............

A mercenary, PL Stewie, is someone who is motivated purely by monetary or material gain. Ie. a soldier of fortune.

It is used as an insulting term, which is rather unfair in some ways, suggesting that they are only at Pompey for the money and have no commitment to the club. Very few players are at a club for the love of it and 'playing for the shirt'. That's a quaint old-fashioned notion that went flying out the window the day Jimmy Hill got the wage cap removed and Bosman won his court case to be able to leave on a free when his contract expired. Both of these were anyway the inevitable consequences from football clubs, such as Pompey, being set up as a business to earn money from a sport and players (contracts) being sold, sometimes against their will - as (most notably) in the cases of Asmir Bogovic, Benjani and several of last year's players.

The fact is that players see being in the sport as a career and each move is just a job to be done. Like any of us who move from job to job as our own careers advance and more money is offered. Nowadays you hear more and more players say 'I just want to play football' and you see them go down a league, or even two, just to be able to play. Just because they are at Pompey it doesn't necessarily make them mercenaries - they are here to do a job, it's just a fact of life.
