Having read quite a few message boards over the years, it strikes me that there can be quite a difference in comments when you have a lot of fans who can get to most matches compared to one like ours that has a high number of long distance fans. I know that I find it difficult to comment on an individuals performance when I can only hear the views of others on the Hornet Player. For that reason I will usually say that according to Jon Marks or a fellow summariser, player X is having a shocker or a blinder. The limited video highlights on the Player, or even the rare occasion we get a live match is still governed by what other wish us to see. It is always interesting to hear a commentary then read the comments of the posters on here who were at the game. Sometimes the views can be very different, but then they can be just as diverse amongst the posters. So can we who live far from the Vic make a reasoned comment about the team, or for that matter the goings on in the boardroom, when all we can go on is the reports by others?
Interesting one Frenchie ,as long as a little time is done "researching" I think yes ,matchwise although its not ideal there are a lot of new streaming sites and the technology is improving, as mentioned the snippets on hornet player and various radio stations help a little! Boardroom wise ,I think you can be in NZ or WD18 and it is the same speculations! although I agree we are dependant on our WD18 brethren for a lot of extra info!!
Morning.... the one thing i lack is the week in week out observations of the players and then a more in depth sense of each one.. rather than a snapshot based on one game every so often
I am finding it really difficult - only having bee away from the Vic for one year I do not feel any real sense of how good or bad a player is. It is only being at whole matches you can really form a view. That is why I now rarely pass opinion on a player who was not there when I went all the time (like Doyley ) As for the Board no-one here has much inside knowledge - despite what some WUMs on 606 used to claim. So anyones opinion is as valid - or not - as anyone else
Short answer to Frenchie's question is 'no, we can't really.' We have to be totally reliant on what the regular attenders are saying, but as we all know, opinions differ all the time even between those who never miss a game. For me the forum is just about keeping in touch. Having been distanced from the Vic by poor health rather than geography I have found it immensely useful and comforting to read what is being said. But I couldn't possibly comment on the team's performances when all I see is a minute or so on the Football League show every week. Actually I've been more active on the forum since I fell ill than before, when I could get to games. Then I only lurked on 606 just to keep up with the breaking news. I had my own opinions about the team and the games, but usually found that someone had already expressed something similar, and never felt the need to chip in.
Although Jersey is part of the British Isles, because of the Portugese community here, I'm more likely to get info on Sporting Lisbon, Benfica or Porto than the 'Orns!
Frenchie, I've never been to Albania, but if the subject crops up over dinner, try and stop me from voicing ther most ill-informed opinions with total conviction...especially after a glass or two
