Newcastle United: Siem de Jong targets Champions League place
New signing Siem de Jong says Newcastle will be aiming for the top four in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League this season.

The 25-year-old Dutchman joined on a six-year contract for an undisclosed fee from Ajax, who he captained to four Eredivisie titles, on Tuesday.

“Number 10 is my favourite position. I hope I can play in that position but I even played as a striker at Ajax”

    Siem de Jong
"I think we're aiming for fourth and trying to be in the Champions League," De Jong told BBC Newcastle.

"I think that is a nice goal, a tough goal, but one we're trying to aim for."

Switzerland-born De Jong made his international debut for the Netherlands in August 2010 and has won six senior caps, scoring two goals, but was not selected for the World Cup.

His brother Luuk, 23, was on loan at St James' Park from Borussia Monchengladbach for the second part of last season but the club struggled for form.

"For him it was a pity as it was quite a difficult time and he wasn't at his best but he said it was a really nice club, stadium and fans and a nice city to live," added De Jong.

"Of course my brother played here last season and so I talked to him about it.

    Man City's nemesis
De Jong scored three goals in two Champions League games against Manchester City during the 2013-14 season
"The club also followed me the last three or four years so for me it was quite a logical step."

During his time at the Amsterdam Arena, De Jong played alongside Premier League players Luis Suarez, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen, and he believes he is just as capable of adapting to the Premier League.

"It's good that a lot of ex-players that I played with had a good step to England and I hope I can do the same," he said.

"I think I'm a smart player who looks for space during the game; I can score goals and give assists and always work hard when we do and don't have the ball.

"Number 10 is my favourite position. I hope I can play in that position but I even played as a striker at Ajax a lot of times, but not a real striker but more like one that comes into the midfield sometimes."

i know they have done it before but all other clubs are too far infront they will be lucky for top half unless the splash more cash! more players leaving aswell! top four ahahahah

Unless Ashley is readying a £200m warchest for Pigeon Pardew then all I have to say is that I admire this guy's ambition.

The likes of Debuchy seen them sell their best player when they had a shot (albeit an outside shot) at Europe, that's why he'll want away. There's probably a "What's the point" mentality amongst their playing staff at the minute, they're gonna need a load more in before they can think about Europe I reckon.

On their forum, one of the fans thinks they only need 2 more players to be in the same position they were before Cabaye left - and they weren't far from CL at that point (I know). He named the two players but I have no idea who they are! Nether of them are Cabaye though!

When you look at some of the transfer fees for the top teams, their warchest and ours put together would possibly buy one player.

At least we`re honest about it.

Not a chance, they have nobody spraying the ball around like Cabaye, he was a fantastic player on the ball their best player by a mile. They need two strikers, plus Cabella, plus Debuchy's replacement, plus probably Sissoko's replacement, plus Ben Arfa to either rediscover form or his replacement. Then they need a centre half who knows how to command a back 4. They might need a new keeper as well. It's a squad overhaul mate.

I'm not sure how many of them are actually believing the top 6 would even be remotely possible, if it's a majority then they're seriously out of touch. They whimpered through 2014 til the end of the season, the leagues whipping boys by all accounts. Poyet's next target would be a full season outside of the bottom 3, with no other objectives, give him his first full season with comfortable security as an objective then you make that attempt at top 10, because let's face it, that's the next step nowadays, the league was almost cut in half last season, bottom 10 in a scrap and top half never really dropped into it.

    Seconded!

Spot on Terry about Poyet - Pardew is a **** of a man - and I reserve that for few people (him and David Cameron mainly) whom I despise. It will be his talking the club up that has made de Jong say these things most likely - set unrealistic targets then anything else is a failure - set lower realistic targets then anything on top of it is a bonus. I'd love to see them finish bottom!

You know, he's scored and assisted goals for fun at Ajax, then had multiple injuries last season including a collapsed lung! You have to wonder why they've suddenly sold him, their club captain and for only 6m. I get the feeling they may have signed a 'has been' on a 6 year deal.

At the start of their relegation season there were similar claims, I don't believe there's any thought behind any of it tbh.

The Mags have swallowed the Sky bullshit hook, line & sinker. Neither us nor them will ever win the PL or CL.

They're stuck with Ashley and his bring them in and sell them on policy.
