He's a good player. Quick, nimble, gives his all, and proved at QPR that he's a very decent and capable finisher. So that's the good news.

Here's the bad news, which I feel slightly outweighs the good points.

OK, 6 months ago - our club was rejected by this chap, in favor of Queens Park Rangers, rock bottom of the Premier League who waited until Christmas to win a game of football last season.
I'm not saying that we were doing much better, but I think anyone who's NOT a mercenary could appreciate that Newcastle United are a far more attractive proposition than QPR.
So, he's a mercenary who only cares about his wallet.

But, on a more important topic, I think everybody has forgotten that this man is awaiting a court case for gang rape. He was arrested only two months ago.

I don't know about you, but I've had enough of employing idiots/mercenaries/criminals.

Do we really want to add these two players to the likes of troublemakers Nile Ranger, Joey Barton, Lee Bowyer, Jonathan Woodgate, Craig Bellamy and Andy Carroll, or mercenaries Michael Owen, Sebastien Bassong, Mark Viduka and Charles N'Zogbia?

Think we should try to get him on loan with an agreement to buy as soon as he is found not guilty (if he is found not guilty). As for going to QPR in January over us... Don't care - we'd benefit from having him in our team. That is more important.

As for the list of trouble/mercenary players, I'd have Barton, Woodgate in his prime, Bellamy in his prime, Carroll, Bassong and N'Zogbia back too. Pre-injury Owen too if it were possible to injury proof his frail glass body.

On one hand you're cutting off your nose to spite your face, but I'm not suggesting it's the wrong way of looking at it.

I would say that if we are considering signing him, there should be a clause if he ends up being banged up for rape, where all bets are off.

Remi doesn't come across as one of the brightest doods, and he was probably swayed by agent pressure to grab a big money contract.

Bar Nile Ranger, I'd have had all the other 'troublemakers' in the present side when they were at their best - some might have needed 'mananging'. Sir Bobby could have got the best out of all of them.

They're all mercenaries so that is a non issue for me.

The rape issue is more of a problem but I imagine you just tee the deal up ready to go until his case is confirmed either way.

The problem with doing that it's fine if he is found not guilty but if he's not then you are left without a striker. I believe the case isn't being heard until September so the transfer window will be shut. It's too much of a risk in my opinion.

That is a problem if that is the case. We'll have to box cute if so. I'm quite happy for the club to take a bit of a risk personally and look to someone like Rhodes who I rate highly and would be a perfect foil for Cisse.

Rhodes would be a very exciting signing. Really think he could make the step up and be a very dangerous Premier League striker. Don't see it happening though - he'd cost a fair bit and I don't think Mike would like that gamble.

Sounds like Blackburn have to sell a senior player though for the Jay Spearing deal to go through. I think he will want to test himself now as he has proven himself well above Championship level. Obviously they shelled out 8m so he won't come cheap like you say. Mike of course would be looking at potential sell on value. He is only 23 though so maybe a couple of big seasons here at PL level, who knows what he'd be worth.

Unlikely as you say but I don't think its that much of a risk to be honest because he looks top quality every time I watch him. I was disappointed when we didn't get involved at 8m. The bonus then would have been his reasonable wages. Him and Austin have impressed me a lot. Austin seemingly has off field issue though given his charge for assault and has failed a medical. There were rumours of a drug problem I believe and that is why he assaulted the bloke? Could be just vindictive jealousy that though.

close enough, except with some semblance of having that important ability of a striker to actually trouble the onion bag.

I would have him sign first thing tomorrow As we need a goal scorer
And I can't see many others waiting to sign,
