Hello and welcome to the third edition of Loan Watch for the 2012/2013 season. This is a feature in which I will keep you up to date with the players Brendan Rodgers has sent out on loan and inform you of their performances so far. At the moment, Liverpool have five players who have been temporarily sent away from Anfield to clubs in England & further afield. They are: Danny Wilson: Bristol City. Jay Spearing: Bolton Wanderers. Henoc Mukendi: Northampton Town. Andy Carroll: West Ham United. Villyan Bijev: IK Start. Danny Wilson- Bristol City. please log in to view this image Danny Wilson left Liverpool to join Bristol City on the 22nd of November 2012. It is an emergency loan deal and he will stay at Ashton Gate for two months. Wilson was assigned the number 40 shirt but has made just one appearance for Bristol City since joining the Championship strugglers. This was a late substitute appearance as Bristol City produced a big shock to beat an in-form Middlesbrough at Ashton Gate. Wilson enters the action on the 93rd minute and played just 2 minutes as the final whistle was blown in the 95th minute. However, Bristol City have struggled defensively in recent games (8 goals conceded in their last 3 games) so Danny may be given the chance by Derek McInnes to cement a position in his favoured centre-back position. Appearances: 1 (One as a substitute) Goals: 0. Assists: 0. Jay Spearing- Bolton Wanderers. please log in to view this image Jay Spearing left Liverpool to join Bolton Wanderers on the 31st of August 2012. It is a season-long loan which means Jay will stay at Bolton Wanderers until the end of the 2012/2013 nPower Championship season. He made his debut for Bolton in a 3-1 defeat away at Hull City. It wasnât the result Own Coyle & Bolton were looking for but by all accounts, Jay made a good debut in the middle of the park and produced a decent performance on his debut. He then continued to get starts in the league and secure his position in the middle of the park for Bolton. However, the results werenât what Bolton were looking for and on the 9th of October, he was sacked by Bolton leaving them 18th in the Championship. When any manager is sacked, players will become concerned that their place is at risk. This would have been the case for Jay but he kept his place in their next game under the caretaker management of Jimmy Phillips & ex-Liverpool player, coach & assistant manager Sammy Lee. This game was a home tie with Bristol City and Jay made a perfect case to keep his spot in the middle of the park with a commanding performance and a goal! Bolton had gone 2-0 but Jay got the second goal to get Bolton back on level terms and Martin Petrov then got the winning goal! The Crystal Palace manager Dougie Freedman was then appointed on the 25th of October and Jay lost his place in Freedmanâs first game in charge at home to Cardiff City. Since then, he has been able to regain his place in the middle of the park and has played in Boltonâs last 3 Championship games. To conclude, itâs been a good spell so far for Spearing at Bolton Wanderers. Heâs been getting regular games in the middle of the park which you feel he wouldnât have got if he had stayed at Liverpool and he has been playing well. Bolton havenât been able to get a run of consistent results going (Much like Liverpool) but his good performances in the centre of midfield will give Bolton a chance of getting those all important wins & three points. Appearances: 16. (One as a substitute) Goals: 1. Assists: 0. Henoc Mukendi- Northampton Town. please log in to view this image Young Liverpool forward Henoc Mukendi joined Northampton Town on loan on the 8th of August 2012 and the loan will run until the 1st of January 2012. He made his debut for Northampton Town in a first round Capital One Cup tie with last seasonâs losing finalists Cardiff City. He came on in the 56th minute and was able to help Northampton produce a shock and beat the Championship side 2-1. A fixture of Henocâs loan spell has been his appearances off the bench. He has played 12 times for Northampton so far and 9 of those appearances have been off the bench. His only starts have come in the domestic cups with two starts in the Johnstoneâs Paint Trophy (A 1-0 win over MK Dons & a 2-1 win over Colchester United) & the F.A Cup (A penalty shoot-out loss to Bradford City) One of those games was the game in which Henoc got his first professional goal. He started the game and got his reward for his hard work up top in the 53rd minute. A cross came into the box & Mukendi was able to glance a header into the net and give Northampton the lead. Since then, itâs been more late substitute appearances in the League but he was given a start in their F.A Cup first round tie with fellow League Two side Bradford City. Bradford went through on penalties and Mukendi wasnât able to get on the scoresheet. So, itâs not been the best loan spell in my opinion. He hasnât got regular minutes and that wonât benefit his game massively. Heâs there for a couple more weeks and it will be interesting to see what happens with him in January. Appearances: 12. (Nine appearances off the bench) Goals: 1. Assists: 0. Andy Carroll- West Ham United. please log in to view this image Andy Carroll left Liverpool to join West Ham United on the 30th of August 2012. This was a season-long loan and means the striker will spend the 2012/2013 season playing at the Boleyn Ground. He made his debut for West Ham United in a 3-0 home victory over Fulham. The striker had an impressive debut, causing the Fulham defence some serious problems and playing a part in two of West Hamâs three goals. He then went off with a tight hamstring. This hamstring injury then meant that Carroll missed West Hamâs next three games and made his return as a 72nd minute substitute in a 2-1 away win for West Ham against Queens Park Rangers. He then started the next game for West Ham but they fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to Arsenal. Carroll was able to cause the Arsenal defence problems but he wasnât able to get on the scoresheet. The next game was an excellent performance for West Ham as they beat Southampton 4-1. Carroll provided the assist for West Hamâs first goal. He was continuing to get starts but his first goal in the Claret & Blue of West Ham didnât come until his 9th appearance for the Hammers. It was a late goal in a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. He then picked up a knee injury in the 62nd minute of West Hamâs 1-0 defeat at Manchester United and this injury ruled him out for eight weeks. His loan spell has been interrupted by hamstring & knee injuries and that isnât good. However, before his latest injury, he was getting a run of games and got his first goal. This should stand him in good stead when he returns from injury. Appearances: 10. (One appearance off the bench) Goals: 1. Assists: 1. Villyan Bijev- IK Start. please log in to view this image Liverpool striker Villyan Bijev joined Norwegian second division side IK Start on the 27th of August 2012 for one year. The striker wasnât afforded too many minutes in the conclusion of IK Startâs season. He got just 11 minutes off the bench and wasnât able to make a significant impact due to the lack of game time. He was on the bench seven more times but wasnât able to get any minutes for IK Start. The Norwegian season is now over & IK Start enjoyed an outstanding season! After relegation to the Adeccoligaen last season, IK Start were able to bounce straight back and gained promotion back to the Tippeligaen. (The highest division in the Norwegian football pyramid) The loan deal with IK Start means that Bijev will spend one year in Norway to help Liverpool gain the necessary work permits to play in England. This means that Bijev will be available for IK Start when the Norwegian season starts again in March. Appearances: 1. (1 as a substitute) Goals: 0. Assists: 0. - Thanks for reading!
I think his age, his performances at euro 2012 and his unique style (along with the "English" premium") will see us get £10m+ for him. I think we'll struggle to get more than £13.5m for him though - he'll be an asset for teams like Newcastle (esp. with Ba being touted as leaving) & West Ham, if we can get those bidding off against each other then I think we can recoup an OK amount of our money back. Yes we've lost a lot on Carroll, Downing and possibly Henderson but we also need to look at players whose values have gone up - Suarez, Enrique, Assiadi, Yesil, etc
You're spot on there, as they're worth what the market says they're worth & what you paid for them is irrelevant. So you can either accept the reality & deal with it accordingly or hang onto them in the vain hope that you'll recoup more of what you originally spent. As you rightly point out, the uplift in values of other players can offset this loss anyway, as far as the books are concerned. I'm sure it's a painful lesson for the Yanks to take, but Comolli & Dalglish made some extremely costly howlers in the market & what's done is done.
I'll be surprised if we get anything less than £17m for him. I believe this is the fee agreed with West Ham at the end of the season. Plus Newcastle will always be interested so AC is not short of admirers.
Despite a poor goal return, they appear to relish what he's brought to their side. His injury record is what might make them think twice imo.
