I know that the football rumours website may not be the most reliable, but the latest posts says CP may be waiting to get some loan players in. NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Please buy players who are part of Charlton and want to play for Charlton, not players who will be gone at the end of whatever period they stay, and know their parent club will welcome them back with open arms. (Nathan Eccleston and Dean Parrett excepted)
I couldn't agree more Malc... However, I do think one or two loan players coming in can be a useful option, providing they're the right individuals (not Frank Nouble... ). Having 4 or 5 in our starting 11 is a massive no no for me though...!! Players like Parrett and Eccleston are exactly the type of loan signing we ought to bring in if the gaffer wants to go down that route... because... the pair of them have got more chance of being shot by the Queen than they have of getting anywhere near the Spurs and Liverpool first teams respectively. They are therefore effectively playing to put themselves in the shop window and would be hoping to attract interest from clubs who they want to take a gamble on bringing them in on a more permanent basis. Having said all that, I like you Malc would far prefer to see a squad put together of players who belong to Charlton Athletic. After all the loan market is not always the cheap option when you break down the costs involved. So with this in mind why not try putting a squad of permanent recruits together, even if you're only offering out short term deals... Make the players play for their supper and if come the halfway point of the season they're doing the business on the pitch then reward their efforts with a longer contract. Carrot - - - - Stick… Works in most other working environments don’t it…?
I agree, to an extent loans work if the player actually has motivation to get himself noticed. The loans we've endured over the past few years have been the likes of Keith Gillespie and Lee Cook, with nothing to gain from playing for us. One or two is no harm, but more than that and it is no longer a 'Charlton' team, rather a bunch of individuals.
Agree with that, Captain B - a couple of loans maximum, and preferably not in straight away. Let's see what our contracted players can do first.
I'd be quite happy to have zero loanees. I know we've had some who have played well, like Song and Carson, but we did get relegated that season, which is the bottom line IMO.
I would be highly surprised if Eccles returned after the way CP treated him last season. All credit to him that he actually stayed, although that could have been down to the London club scene, because I would have gone early. Sullivan and Parrett were good loan signings. But like others have said, let us see what we have before patching up the squad.
Loans have become an inevitable part of the Football League - during the season I defy anyone to name a club in the FL who hasn't had at least one loan player at some point. I agree Billy, a team without any loanees would be great (a goal feels better when it's scored by a player actually contracted to Charlton rather than a guy who we know is only here temporarily) but, when used wisely, a loan move can benefit the player and the club hugely - look at Lansbury at Norwich for instance. The other downside to loans is that it sends a devastating message of 'no confidence' to the player who is being kept out of the team, particularly if it comes before a ball has even been kicked in the new season. Let's see what they can do first.
