This is a good point, and something raised by myself, along with many other fans at the time...Keegan is a legend, he did amazing things for this club and they will not be forgotten. But the fact is, he knew, that when taking money from the club, he was damaging the club, and who was to suffer as a result? Us, the fans!

We know that Ashley lied to him, we know he was treated disrespectfully and since the whole incident has occurred it appears to me that Keegan was simply a figurehead/mascot for the fans, rather than a true manager of the club. I can understand him walking away, but £26m? Howay man!

This bit isn't that surprising, but does give a little more insight into the club's thought process behind the Carroll sale. I don't think it's a case of Newcastle pushing her out, more a strategic move on our part. Liverpool were desperate for a striker and time was running out...It's the reason christmas decorations cost so much in December but are in the sales come January 1st! Simple supply and demand!

It seems calculating and ruthless, but at the end of the day, it's the direction football is heading and I suppose we, as fans, can do nout but accept it...

Also, with regards to Carroll, I wouldn't be surprised if the club filtered down the reported figure of £80k a week wages...Am I wrong in thinking talking to Carroll without our permission would be tapping up? In which case, they must have leaked the info themselves?

Again, this wouldn't surprise me, nor would I be THAT annoyed...£35m is officially a '**** load' of money! We wouldn't be offered that amount for him again I don't think (it was completely circumstantial).

 

In fairness, you have to agree with him regarding Keegan. He could have seriously damaged the club just for his own selfish needs. I am sure he is not in a position in life where he needs more money to keep him going.


Regarding Milner, despite being a Guthrie fan and Jonas fan respectively, you cannot argue that either of these could be described as a replacement for Milner.

Personally I only see Jonas as a replacement, the others are in different positions.. But yeah not really a replacement, Milner was much better.

 

No certainly not, and in hindsight, we slipped up with Milner. He has since gone on to become a better player with a much inflated transfer figure...Having said that, at the time I was happy with the £13m we got for him and devestated when we sold Woodgate for £13m! It just goes to show, transfer markets can be as much about luck as knowledge and experience!

 

I always felt let down at the fact keegan was asking for a huge sum of money. he had a right to some compensation and was treat like dirt, but the amount he was supposedly after would have been crippling and would have set us back.

as for carroll i felt let down at the time but logically £35 million is a lot of money. i still think if he really wanted to stay he could have, end of the day if he really didnt want to play for us £35 mill is a very good exchange.

Also now with him gone the whole team is getting the praise they deserve and i think we are taken more seriously now.

 

Was it true that we were offered Schweinsteiger? (forgive the spelling) for dirt cheap?

 

I think is was for about 13 - 15mill. so not cheap. although he will be almost double that now. lol

Not sure if we were offered him, but pretty sure not getting him was on thing which angered Keegan.

 

Can't remember where I heard it, was in the summer of last year sometime, probably a pile of crap but just wanted to see if anyone else had heard it.

Cheers Cal...Interesting as to why this was the last straw for Keegan? Refusal to match wages perhaps?

 

Keegan was at the time he came back to Newcastle heavily involved in the Soccer Circus venture in Glasgow, there are reports of accounts showing that he had to loan £2.37 million to the venture to keep it afloat at around this time after it had recorded a loss of £1 million in the first year. It would appear that the move back into football was probably influenced in part by this, the Glasgow operation closed down in early 2009 I think and they moved out to Dubai in 2010, Keegan was certainly not as financially secure as you would expect.

 

Interesting, though to be fair when he was playing there was no where near as much money in the game...

 

Plus, as far as I remember he walked away from the England and Man City jobs rather than wait around for compensation and walked away from Fulham in order to take the England job...
