Vital to get balance right - Johnson
    Tuesday, May 15th 2018

Lee Johnson has spoken of the importance for a balanced squad.

With the season over, the head coach continues to work behind the scenes ahead of the players' return for pre-season.

And he was invited on Geoff Tewntyman's Sound of the City show on Monday evening (May 14th) where he reflected on the 2017/18 campaign - when City secured their highest league finish for eight seasons - and his thoughts as he looks towards an exciting new season.

On the show, Johnson said he may look to add to the squad once the summer transfer window opens, but he also stressed his belief in his current players to help improve the team further.

“I think it needs to be both, that’s important," the head coach told BBC Radio Bristol.

"But they don’t make them like they used to. We used to learn from our peers, when I came through I had players like Tommy Mooney and Richard Johnson who were hard as nails. You learned from them, how to communicate and that could have been the right or wrong way but naturally you try to communicate in that way.

"That’s education for the players and I often say to them 'I need to move 20 per cent towards the Millennials but you have to move 20 per cent to us as well.'"

He was also asked about his feelings towards the squad last summer.

'PLAYERS HAVE WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR'
Johnson continued: "I think it was Lee Johnson’s team at the start of the summer window. I was pleased with that squad. We had a nice balance of experience, height and youth with players coming through and it changes.

"If we did lose three or four then we would have had to rebuild again. It’s a constant adjustment and you try to make decisions based on improving year on year.

"In terms of style in play and what I’m after, I feel I’ve got but it but that doesn’t mean we’re not trying to improve and add more quality in those areas."

Christ this gets confusing, "That’s education for the players and I often say to them 'I need to move 20 per cent towards the Millennials but you have to move 20 per cent to us as well.''

Logically if you move 20% towards the Millennials and they move 20%,you end up back where you started..:headbang:

I think in a clumsy way he is saying it’s a compromise with the youngsters because they have a very different approach to the older players.
I believe this - because my kids have totally different approaches to life than me - and it drives me insane!

Can the young of today go anywhere without a GPS system? I was told on my arrival in Southampton by ship 2 years ago that I would get totally lost unless I had sat/nav on my rental car and told the young idiot behind the counter that I had a brain and could read road signs and sop I would have no trouble. I reached Somerset in good time, unless you factor in the Salisbury ring road which goes straight through the city, and wonder why people's brains have become so obsessed by having some device telling them what to do and where to go and have essentially become slaves to their own lack of personal choice. Enough already.

Is there such a device designed for, and by, football managers or do they actually have to use their own brains?

Waffle waffle waffle, confusing isn't the word.
If it isn't Ashton it's LJ and the Board believe them.
Next season is going to be very interesting.

That's not what he said - he said they need to move 20% closer also, i.e. a total of 40%, the point being that the old ways still have some value, but so does the new. For whatever shortcomings LJ has, this quote is fine.

That means he feels we were 40% apart to start off with, even worse than my comedic first comment, by the way, I do agree, you are never to old to learn.

LC Cup run notwithstanding, we won 3 of our last 21 league games, and all of those were at home.
We conceded a shocking amount of goals compared to other teams, and as someone said elsewhere, when we were 2nd in the table we bottled it as a club, just like we did in 2008 when we bought mediocrity instead of getting in 2 or 3 quality/experienced players who would probably have seen us promoted automatically.

But the spin and half truths continue to come out of the corridors, just like they always have.

Nothing ever changes, except our failure to succeed and to do the right thing at the right time.

Naahh...he thought the two parties were 100% apart and a closing of the gap by 40% is needed. Of course, if there's no gap there's no need to move.
