Liverpool will target big signings in summer - Ian Ayre

Liverpool will hand manager Brendan Rodgers a significant summer transfer kitty as the club seek to build on qualification for the Champions League.

The Reds, who are favourites to win Premier League, believe Europe's elite competition will help them attract top talent and are willing to pay for it.

"It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy," said managing director Ian Ayre.

Liverpool's small squad have benefited from not playing in Europe this season.

After the club finished seventh last term and missed out on even the Europa League, Rodgers' target for the current campaign was to finish in the top four.

However, he has exceeded all expectations and title-chasing Liverpool are now assured of at least third place and have avoided the need to go through a qualifying playoff to reach the Champions League proper.

That has made the club more attractive to players and Ayre believes they can now acquire their top targets.

"It has always been tougher in the transfer market when you are not competing at the highest level. We had the issue with Luis [Suarez] last summer because he wanted to play in the best games against the best players. That is always a factor," Ayre said.

"We have always been fortunate to be able to bring great players here despite that but there is no question it opens up a few doors for us and makes it a little bit easier.

"There is no question we always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad that we have needed for this year when we were not playing in Europe."

It is likely that Liverpool's main focus will be on defensive reinforcements.

sounds good, but what about our wage policy, wont that detract some players as they will chase the wages still.

I hope we don't make so many changes that we change the way we play, or undo the team spirit that we have.
Tighten up at the back, certainly- and build a squad strong enough to compete in the CL, but most of the players who have got us to where we are this season deserve the chance to prove they can keep it up, imo.

Agreed, but 3 top quality signings is about right and then some others for squad rotation.

I think we need to rebuild our own thinking

Having 3 in might help in 6 games midweek but it's worth f all if you lose or draw at the weekend or run out if legs in February

We need to expect to win, to play the full season therefore the albertos and aspas and Moses situation must go. It's ok to have ilori off on loan and he could turn up great in ine year all the bigger clubs are at it

But we need options that means more than 4 cams for 3 slots more than 2 forwards for two slots

Remember 5-2-3 with fn Moses on loan filling in. That's where we were and right now everyone is fit

Oh and one game a week with one guy on long term injury for past how long? we took 2 out v Norwich and were disrupted

You know it makes sense guys, our next step in recovery is not win the league it's sustain cl and trophy contention not a one off. Our club is in a good road but we must get our new players in and sustain the build

So we do a Spurs and bring in a load of expensive players who don't even know which way they're facing half the time?
We all agree we need to strengthen, I don't believe we need to make too many changes- it hardly ever works.
Improve the weaker areas first, then other parts become the weakest areas and you improve them further down the line.
    Evolution, not revolution.

I think there are 3 positions that we need to address:

    - Both full back positions need upgrading and we must get in players who are ready to go straight into the first team.

    - We need an upgrade on Lucas (who I think will be going in the summer).

I would class these as priority and then we need a couple of attackers to really boost the depth, so that we're no longer having to rely on Aspas and Moses. (Fimino and Kono would be my picks).

saint, I think that we can go a little further than that. Next season we do have the option of having CL players at least until the end of the group stages. These players will be training and integrating with the squad and maybe augmenting the bench with the occasional sub appearance. We also have the opportunity to replace our existing makeweights with far better quality. Therefore the number may appear almost Spurs like but their use will be very different. As you say evolution and not revolution

    <applause>

    Spot on old boy <ok>

Saying that the caliber of players we can get in would be higher than Spurs due to us being Liverpool, and potential PL champions with CL football.

I said on another thread I would be happy with 2 or 3 quality sigings in the summer, then we can reevaluate in Januray. Small steps of progress is the way forward long term.

Think we need more than just 2/3 quality players. We need to strengthen the PL side and create a CL side that can play different styles home and away. Personally I wouldn't take the chance on the January window.
