NO-ONE at Liverpool FC has the heart to make Steven Gerrard retire before he is a pensioner, it has emerged.

Future managers at the club will have it pre-written into their contract that they must always select Gerrard even if he can only move about the pitch on a mobility scooter.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said: “This club has always been about the heart, the passion and the pointless sentimentality.

“Nowhere does this more apply than when it comes to Steven Gerrard. He is Mr Liverpool.

“The only analogy I can think of for a Liverpool team without Steven Gerrard is a Liverpool team without Steven Gerrard.”

Backroom staff are currently developing a special prosthetic cannon to be attached to the side of Gerrard’s leg should he ever lose the ability to play his trademark 80 yard crossfield balls.

Rodgers said: “Only one in ten of the passes from the cannon lands anywhere near the feet of a forward. With Gerrard currently, it’s one in 20 so we’ve got to decrease the accuracy.”

Steven Gerrard said: “I intend to play on till Liverpool win a Premier League title, however long that takes.

“Even if I have to be wheeled around the centre circle in a coffin on castors, I want to play a key role in that triumph. Never walk alone, whatever that means.”

Its really frustrating that we've spent millions and Gerrard at 33 is the only attacking player we've got that can score goals and make something happen in the last third and run in behind the opponents defence, and he's also the only midfielder we've got that can start attacks from deep instead of constantly giving it back to the centre backs.

    He doesn't even provide that!

He goes missing for around 75-80 mins a game.

I knew Gerrard would evade criticism because of the goal but he was absolutely awful. Such a hindrance to this team along with Lambert.

Disagree. Gerrard was the only player in our team who made meaningful runs in behind.

I'd say our awful performers were Henderson, Lambert & Enrique.

The rest, including Gerrard, did ok but nothing great (goal apart)

Gerrard was awful - giving away possession all the time, nothing meaningful. Granted, he did pick it up for the last 10 mins but that was only when Basel were sitting back and protecting their lead. It's a shame Gerrard cannot impact a game when the game dynamics are even. It's the same with the Leicester game.

Can't argue with the other players our mentioned though.

He gave the ball away a few times but who wasn't guilty of that last night? Even the likes of Allen & Lucas, who are usually really reliable, turned into trouble a few times. Gerrard was responsible for our two best attacking moments of the game (the run through to go 1v1 & the free kick) and he was nowhere near as bad as most of our other players so I wouldn't say his performance was awful in the context of our other players' performances.
