Liverpool & QPR Enter Bidding War in Race for £10m Tottenham Striker
by The Newshound May 28th, 2012

Anfield and Loftus Road sides battle for White Hart Lane forward.

QPR are ready to rival Liverpool in the race to sign Jermain Defoe.

The England striker has revealed his frustration with a lack of first-team starts at Tottenham and is likely to be granted a move this summer if a £10million price tag is met.

Liverpool were keen to sign Defoe, 29, before Kenny Dalglish’s sacking and so any potential move to Anfield is on ice until the club appoint a new manager and sporting director.

Rangers boss Mark Hughes is aware of Defoe’s availability as he looks to overhaul a squad which only narrowly avoided relegation last term.

QPR are one of the few clubs who could meet Tottenham’s valuation as well as wages of around £70,000 a week.

    SOURCE: The People

Though a move for 29 year old Jermain Defoe doesn’t exactly adhere to Liverpool’s youthful transfer policy there is a definite need to improve on the threadbare options the Anfield side currently calls upon up front. Though a new manager is yet to be appointed it seems likely that anyone who comes in to fill the vacant manager’s hot-seat it seems likely that any replacement would look to improve on the club’s firepower after they managed just 47 goals in Premier League action last term.

QPR could however tempt Defoe as a move to Loftus Road would have more chance of securing regular first team football and that is something the England international has missed of late. Last term he lost his place to loanee Emmanuel Adebayor and was restricted to just 11 starts, however the former West Ham & Portsmouth man did still garner 17 goals in all competitions last term.

Liverpool had to overly rely on Luis Suarez for end product last term but would have been pleased with the run of good form Andy Carroll produced in the latter stages of the season, form that may well see the former Newcastle United man start for Roy Hodgon’s England side with Wayne Rooney suspended for the group stages.

Harry Redknapp would be loathed to lose Defoe having seen Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko leave over the past 18 months. However if the Tottenham man can not guarantee first team football then he should not be surprised that a player closing in on his 30th birthday would push for a White Hart Lane exit.

There's absolutely nothing concrete in this article at all:
"and is likely to be granted a move this summer"
"Liverpool were keen to sign Defoe"
"Mark Hughes is aware of Defoe’s availability"
    "QPR could however tempt Defoe"

Whilst I still rate Defoe and actually really wouldn't mind seeing him down the Rangers for a couple of seasons, I hate this kind of aimless article. There isn't even a phantom "source" quoted. It's going to be a loooong summer...

Liverpool chasing Defoe! They don't even have a manager - and they've sacked most of the staff involved in transfers.
All that taken into account - just shows it's "chip paper" gossip!:emoticon-0136-giggl

As Liverpool says, crap article. But I think a nailed on 12-15 goals from one player, possibly more, would be very welcome. Don't really care if it's Defoe, Cisse or someone else. But at the moment I can't see Zamora ( though his role is different), Betty or DJ delivering this. If he is still around Adel needs a few more in midfield as well.

Although I do not want silly money spent on old men it is good to read a line like this.

I can see this happening. £8million would be around the price.

Serious how can you say that two completly different types of players. And people are at it again defoe is too old can we please get real Defoe is one of the best forwards in the prem. with Cisse and Defoe up front we would have the best front line in the league.

I really dont know what people want please let me know who would be better then Defoe, who has prem experience knows how to score for fun. Because i said this to all the cisse douters out there when we was linked to him. He was not good enough etc etc now you all love him.

I agree wrighty , he is still one of the best around and it is great that our club is going toe to toe with Liverpool for a good pl striker . My only concern would be would defore and cisse be able to play in the same team. I'm still looking forward to seeing Zam and Cisse start up front in a few games. We looked really dangerous when they started at home ( on the rare occassion they could ).

Whatever the pros and cons of Defoe, it is fantastic to see QPR in the transfer news with serious intent.

Looks like it will be an interesting summer though not as white knuckle as the last week of last season!

Trouble is we will have Cisse or Defoe up front, not both of them. So we will end up paying massive amounts for one of them to sit on the bench

In fairness Defoe/Suarez/Carroll would be a lethal strike partnership

Yes it would be welcomed with a nailed on 12-15 goals from a forward, but Defoe is not that man. Only three times in his career spanning 12 seasons and 381 league games has he scored more than 12 goals, and that is including one season in Bournemouth.

Have never understood the worship of Defoe on here. Yes his movement is good and he score some cracking goals. But as Sir Les, Spurs forward coach said, Defoe isn't capable of scoring the type of goals that makes him a 20 goals a season striker.

What we're talking about here are transfer fee and wages higher than what Newcastle paid for Papiss Cisse who has scored 13 goals in 14 matches since joining in January, something Defoe only has managed twice in 10 whole seasons in the top flight. And Cisse is three years younger than Defoe which means that he represent resale value compared to Defoe. Just goes to show that there is quality out there and definitely more value for money than what this deal represent.

Yes I would like Defoe at QPR, he's well good enough, but not at the figures being bandied about and with the expectation that he'll get us 15 goals a season, as the facts heavily contradicts this.

I would rather one of them sitting on the bench then Borthroyd or Campbell

None of them want to sit on the bench though, thats the problem. Bothroyd and Campbell are willing to sit on the bench because they know its the best role they'll get at a PL side.

Btw, Defoe is a ****ty version of Cisse, so I don't see how this would be a good move at all for QPR.
