I know it might sound stupid, but I do think the Liverpool game is a must win. They have been playing well of late but they will play a similar way to us and that will suit us a lot more, so 3 points is desperately needed as we won't get anything v Chelsea I don't think, so to go In to reading game on 31 points would be brilliant and a win there would set us up nicely for the home games against the hammers and WBA with I think we are capable of getting atleast 4 points from and could well be safe then! But if we lose to Liverpool and Chelsea then we are really In deep trouble, so I would go as far as saying Liverpool is a must win, agreed?
I agree that the table will not make for good reading in two games time, if we lose them both. Very strong chance that we'll have dropped down to 17th (especially given that Villa and QPR play each other), and we may even have dropped into the bottom three. But so long as the players - and the fans!!! - keep their heads up, then it wont be terminal. Thus Liverpool is not a must win. I think three wins and one draw will almost certainly be enough for us (might, just might, need two draws). That is four games worth of points. We'll still have seven games left after Liverpool and Chelsea. And at least five of them are winnable.
I think we have to pick up at least one point from the two games. So many people on this forum never want to call a game a must win because it shows we are in a battle. But we are. We must beat reading because i cant see anything from the next two games. even a draw against reading would be a disaster.
I can only speak for myself, but the reason why I'm generally against calling games 'must-win' is because of what the person calling it 'must-win' is therefore implying, should we not win. Unless that person really does think that your target really will be out of reach should you not win (regardless of what that target is - survival, promotion, play-offs, title, europe, top half finish etc), then the game cannot be described as a 'must-win' in book. 'Important', 'crucial', 'six-pointer', 'biggest game of the season to date' etc all fine with me. None of them, for me, imply that it is all over if you don't win it. But 'must-win' does.
I think we are more than capable of getting 4 points out of these 2 games. I'm praying that Suarez is injured or sent off today which will make life a lot easier next week. I will be a lot more confident if Suarez doesn't play.
Well 1 point from the next two games keeps us out of the drop-zone regardless. Then we have our big day at Reading. That is the must win, as one will hammer a large and rather irremovable nail into the coffin of another whilst clambering towards escape.
Said exactly the same on another thread. I know they are not a 1 man team but I'd feel a lot more confident if he couldn't play.
I truly think we can pick up unexpected points from either Liverpool or Chelsea or maybe both, but I agree with Tom a red card or a hamstring tweak for Suarez would be good for us
Villa beat QPR at home. Wigan beat Norwich and Newcastle at home. Would hardly be the biggest shock in the world.
I think the stoke game at the end of the season will defo be a 'must win' ,typical saints doing it the hard way always have done and probably always will when we are competing for something, make us fans wait till the last day of the season!
Oh yes. If my predictions are right (they wont be of course!), then Stoke will indeed be a must-win. I'm pretty convinced that this is going down to the last day.
If we drop into the bottom 3 I really think that will be it, We can't score in a month of Sundays at the moment and to have the added pressure of playing catch up and having to score..... I really can't see it.
Olly you and StB are worrying for nothing. The three teams at the bottom in effect have to win two more games than us to stay up. It won't happen!
And if we pick up the points that I think we'll pick up, then we should be safe. I'm just saying that those points include Stoke, and do not include Liverpool and Chelsea.
If you're calling games against in-form teams who are much better than us "must win" you're going to end up disappointed. We've still got games against Reading, West Ham, Swansea, West Brom, Sunderland and Stoke. 6 genuinely winnable games there, and we only need to win 3 of them. The Liverpool game is in no way "must win".
