It's actually 'half-caste'. Possibly an archaic usage in many parts of the Anglo Saxon world, although India's caste system seems as rigid and entrenched as ever, but it would be racist to comment negatively on that.

I've always used half-caste and never considered it insulting. I'd have thought any black with a brain wouldn't be particularly bothered, but let's not forget that there are thousands of people making their money by turning innocent words and phrases into 'vile racial attacks on defenseless minorities'
