Some of the pool fans can see the funny side of it, but you will always have bitter ones.

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has urged England supporters to go easy on Steven Gerrard, writes the Daily Star.

Gerrard came under fire for his involvement in Uruguay’s second goal on Thursday evening, when the Liverpool talisman inadvertently glanced a header into Luis Suarez’s path as he attempted to intercept an arching pass.

Nevertheless, Scholes insists that the England captain cannot be held accountable for the South American’s winning goal, pointing towards the defenders’ failure to sense the danger in the first place.

Writing at his Paddy Power blog, Scholes said: “There’s no way you can blame Steven Gerrard for not getting more on the ball from a header in the middle of the park for Luis Suarez’s second goal.

“The defenders didn’t sense the danger. Joe Hart has looked a bit shaky too – but we don’t really have anyone to replace him.”

Coming off the back of a fantastic season in the Premier League with Liverpool, Gerrard’s performances for England this summer have been uncharacteristically lacklustre, which Scholes attributes to a long campaign with The Reds.

“The Liverpool and England captain hasn’t had a great tournament by his standards. He’s not the box-to-box player he once was.

“Brendan Rodgers recognised this at Liverpool and they’ve adjusted his style of play to get the maximum from him.

“It’s not easy to keep up those high levels of performance – particularly after the season he’s had with Liverpool’s title challenge.”

A team led by a RS player with a good number of other RS players was bound to f**k up. Gerrard and Henderson had really shameful campaigns and on this evidence Gerrard should retire and Henderson should not wear an England shirt again.

Gerrard should be sacked before he stands down tomorrow. His head was bound to have been affected by the RS being pipped to the title by his own slips.

Hodgson for all the praise he was getting about giving youth a chance massively f**ked up by not playing Barkley from the very start. And playing to many worthless RS players <ok>

The RS fans are totally deluded and ******ed anyway. Why they were celebrating winning the title a few matches before the end of the season didn't they. <laugh>
