Always been a big question this because you hear so many conflicting stories about the atmos at grounds on your away days. A lot of it though I think is on how your team is performing on the whole. Keane when our manager called OT a morgue at times, the prawn sarnie stuff. Stoke was a noisy ground a few years ago but they seem to be back making the piss pots and killing each other. Peter Reid's reign at our place created one of our best atmosphere's and noise that equalled Stokoe's reign at Roker.. So what's the best atmos you have known on away days?
The atmosphere is subjective as if you’re winning away you’ll only hear your own really and conversely if you’re getting gubbed it’ll do wonders for the home lot wherever you are. Personally I’ve always loved going to lower league grounds for cup ties, had some cracking away days and met some sound people at lower league aways.
Anfield away was always good. So was the City ground when Nottingham Forest were in the top flight. Loudest ground I've been to was St James Park though. Those ****ing Geordies sing non stop, even when they are getting battered.
Wolves has been the only decent one from the last couple of years really and you'd expect that from a newly promoted club doing well.
Whenever we've been drawn against Tranmere in the cup there's been absolute mayhem at their ground, "we hate the scousers" echoing around the the place and running battles, we came out of there after one game and there was fighting all the way down to the ferry landing stage, we'd have all been in the river if we'd gone any further. The ****bags got a police escort from the Pier Head on our side for the 2nd leg and never got inside Anfield until just before half time.
Fratton Park in January 1984 was a bit ****ing lively. Probably any derby where the teams don't play each other all that often. I wandered into a pub in Swansea once on the way back from a wedding. Not a stick of furniture in the place - landlord said he put it all in storage before Cardiff's visit, to stop the tables going through his windows.
When I said Sunderland, I was thinking more about the atmosphere mate. I get your point about those 3 though.
How the **** can you tell who you’re meant to be fighting? I’d just keep switching sides depending on who was winning. Great survival instincts me.
