Many thanks for your research but I got lost trying the first one out <doh>

I'm a bit of a techno-phobe really so I nearly always send it to the shop at this point

However as a last resort I tried a system restore to a point I saved last friday and everything has gone back to level green with ESET

my only worry now is that the gremlins are still hiding in this laptop somewhere , so when I get back to London later I will probably download the removal tools you posted just to be absolutely sure
