Broke Gerd Mueller's goal scoring record yesterday. For club and country, he has scored 86 goals this year. That is just insane numbers. Before Messi came along, I used to think how unrealistic it was when my forward in Fifa was getting 50 plus goals per season. I am 22 years old, and without a doubt he is the greatest player I have ever seen. As Arsenal fans, we know how good he is from first hand experience, sadly.

Is he the greatest ever for anyone else? If not, who is?

The world cup argument is a load of horse ****, as far as I am concerned. The CL is a far harder competition now.

World Cup has got more prestige, but the Champions League is much harder to do well in.

I wouldn't have him as the greatest ever i'd still say Maradona was better, but he's definitely better than Pele.

Maradona was a fat little greasy cheat. Messi is twice as good as him.

Maradona was an artist with the ball. So what if he was a fat cheat? He won a world cup on his own, not many people can do that.

Haha, funny, 'could' overtake him? Messi is far greater than Pele. Pele never even played in Europe, Messi just scored 86 goals in a single year, playing in Europe, and in one of the best leagues, and best world competition in the Champions League, so to even argue Pele is greater than Messi is devoid of any real substance, but simply based on some nostalgic bull ****.

    Pele has nothing on Messi.

Congrats, Pele scored like 1000 goals playing in Brazil and the U.S.

Pele banged in goals for fun over a ridiculous period of time consistently in an age where defenders were allowed to get away with a hell of lot worse then they are now, on **** pitches not to mention with arguably far inferior players around him than Messi had (i mean for club not country). This is without mentioning he was scoring goals for Brazil in 3 different World Cup winning teams over 12 years (back then it was truly a test of players).

So bollocks to your comment that Pele has nothing on Messi, I actually think Messi will end up the greatest player of all time especially if he continues as is but your comment is just....well bollocks!!!!

Yes, Pele was surrounded by far inferior players around him, THE OPPOSING PLAYERS HE WAS UP AGAINST, that's why he scored for fun in the ****ty Brazilian and AMERICAN league, LOL.

Messi is a far better player than Pele ever was. And I can name a whole load of other players that are greater than Pele: Maradona, Zidane, Fat Ronaldo, Ronaldino in his prime, and the list goes on.

Messi is the greatest ever IMO.

To do what he's doing now is FAR harder than at anytime in the past.

The level of athleticism of the modern day player is the big difference. The guys Messi is playing against are of a FAR higher calibre than what Pele and Maradona faced during their careers.

Messi has scored 86 goals in this last calendar year. 30 Goals this Season already!!

Most people wont admit he's the greatest until he's retired. The same was true of Zidane - It wasnt until his final year or so of playing that he really gained the recognition he deserved.

On a logical level yeah Messi is the best player/will be people forget he is only like 25 he has aanother 5-7 years at the top to blow others out of the water. But football fans are romantics and these decisions are invariably made with the heart not the head for example the best player for me will always be Fatty Ronaldo before his knees went. I had never seen a better combonation of speed, strength, skill and finishing I love that fat bastard. :)

PELE never played in Europe as did no Brazilian player of his era. This is because at that time the Brazilian league would have been comparable with any European league. The difference between you and me is i saw PELE play and you didn't.PELE won the World cup when he was 17 and went on to win 3 in total.

Messi has never played Stoke or the like on a wet Monday night like Rooney.

    Therefore, Rooney >>> Messi.
