Putting the Premier League to shame at the minute. Montpellier won their first ever league title tonight with a 2-1 win at relegated Auxerre, just a year after finishing 14th (English equivalent this season: Stoke), and are the 5th team in 5 years to have won Ligue Un. A further five have been champions since 1992. Fair enough, the quality's not that brilliant (their match-winner tonight being John Utaka with a brace), but for unpredictability and excitement it's the place to be at the minute.
Oh, and going into the final game 8 teams could have filled the two remaining relegation places. Crazy.
Watched the last 20 mins.. match suspended twice due to fans causing trouble..They've done really well, cos in France PSG had finished their game earlier, winning 2-1 so Montpellier knew what they had to do.. they went behind but came back.. PSG have been massive favourites all season long but Montpellier's home form has been really solid & right at the end they beat Lille (3rd) away & today Auxerre.. PSG will be odds on next season of course and the rest of the decade but this team from the south have done themselves proud.
Yeah I started to take an interest in French football in 2005 after seeing Lyon hammer Werder Bremen 7-2 in the Champions League, but it started to wane when they won the league for a 5th, 6th and then 7th successive year. I've been watching it more since Bordeaux won the title in 2009, and I'm really into it now after seeing Marseille, Lille and now Montpellier win the last 3. I think you're right about PSG next season, but I'd like to see Saint-Ãtienne finally win it again
And it's good to see money doesnt always buy success. Weren't PSG the biggest spenders in Europe this summer? Javier Pastore for £42million et al.
After the events of the past 2 weeks i don't we have much to worry about the premier league being dull. Sure some results are predictable, but i never thought it would be that close going into the last a few minutes of the last match. If you want unpredictable, i didn't predict Villareal to get relegated in Spain after being in Europe the last few seasons.
Any system that throws up the possibility of a club like Stoke winning the title just has to be flawed.
I'd second that, just to piss off the locals, OL plastics.. plus I know the founder of Saint Etienne's Magic Fans, which is a "fan group", a true green blood..
