I'm leaving mine on. I think it's sick celebrating the start of war. I'm all for celebrating the end of a war, but what is there to celebrate about war? Sick. Sick. Sick.

Nobody is celebrating but remembering those who went and gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Switching the lights off was a way of honouring those who lost their lives in the war.

They died for your freedom, the least you could have done was to switch your lights off in respect.

At least you were in the minority of one in this thread.

Fair enough, but what does switching lights off achieve. While the lights are off wars are raging everywhere and no-one seems to care. It seems a bit gimmicky, Distract everyone from current wars by remembering those from past wars.

What about all the others that dies in the various wars? Are we switching the lights off for them, or have they been forgotten.

May as well just click a 'like' button. Does not good at all. Will lights off stop current or future wars? No. It takes more than that.

So remember them by all means, but don't forget the others, especially those still be killed right now.

Not having a go at you or anyone else on here, but just think war is a sick joke. Always started by politicians arguing and bullying, and never by ordinary people.

We would be a sad nation if we never remembered one of the most important part of our history with the Great War. We are celebrating and remembering those lives lost so that we can live. The fallen deserve to be remembered just like the ones who came home should be celebrated. I wore my medals with pride yesterday and it was so good to see many many others doing the same...

Not only remembering, but hopefully learning.

Part of this year has seen thousands of schoolchildren visit the war memorials in Belgium and France. Hopefully, and I say hopefully, amongst those thousands of schoolchildren may be a future decision maker or prime minister of this country.

When asked to make a decision in 20 or 30 years time, MAYBE, the image of seeing tens of thousands of graves MAY just trigger off an emotion which says "STOP, Let's not go to war. What are our alternatives"

We live in hope <ok> That is why yesterday was so important. It wasn't a "celebration".

i'm not a believer of symbolic gestures like lights out, but i remember the armed forces of WW1 in other ways, and for me the most important thing is remembrance……………. RIP

I see it more as commemorating than celebrating, and as such, my lights went out.

It's not a celebration it's commemorating an event which changed the world for ever and the effects are still with us , there are still people alive today who's had to live with the aftermath of that War , its being remembered because enough people cared to do so.

I would be all for it if everyone would learn the lessons, but the USA (with the UK tagging along) are always fighting wars in places where it is none of their business. Why are UK fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan, supporting Israel, wanting to fight in Syria? None of those wars, or the countless others, has anything at ll to do with our freedom. It makes people hate us and curtails our freedoms. We're a lot less free these days than we used to be. It just seems like a hollow gesture to me. To some of you it's obviously not, but to the population at large it's forgotten the next day.

What will put people off war is if we showed them the real horrors, not lights out, poppies, graves, or whatever. Show them people blown to bits for nothing. Show them millions of civilians killed for no reason whatsoever. Civilians are always targeted in wars. That has nothing at all to do with our freedom. Just look at Israel slaughtering children in Gaza. Let's switch off the lights for a few minutes and then we can forget about it.

I still still remember the shrapnel marks on grandfathers face..... I use to always think about how that moment was when I looked at it
The sacrifices and bravery shown in those days is just to hard to think about , most should have beenin school . . God Bless them all , been some lucky generations to follow because of them .
