Having lived in exclusive Shortlands for twenty years I developed a snobbery I should have not inherited after being brought in Catford during my school years. I would food shop in either Bromley or Beckenham and always in Sainsburys, and Safeways when they were around. Once Safeways in Beckenham High Street closed and Lidl opened up I solely shopped in Sainsburys. On the VERY odd occasion I would go in to Lidl it just reminded of the mess that used to be Kwik Save, but at least there were only about 5 people in the shop and so it was easy! Tbf when I purchased meat from there it was always okay, it was never a problem with the quality of the food. Now to fast forward ten years Lidl has moved forward in leaps and bounds. Instead of 5 people in there, as last night in Locksbottom there were about 30 people(on Sundays you cannot move). The food is nice, the prices are very nice, this I can vouch for as a couple of years ago I did a like for like test and £20 of groceries there was £30 in Sainsburys. Then we have the Rolls Royce comparison with Marks and Spencers. I have always found food in their superb but very expensive, and nowadays a spring clean of the supermarkets has increased the size and there are now mountains of people in the one I PASS THROUGH in Bromley. However, when I see certain food three times more than what I am paying in Lidl(I often frequent ALDI as well) I shudder to think what my £60 trolley full in Lidl would be in Marks and Spencer. I don't think the popularity of Lidl is down to the economy nowadays as I still see the affluent types in there. My question is "is there anybody on this board who would not go in to Lidl?", and if so, why?
I can honestly say, hand on heart, I have never been in either Lidl or Aldi. Thankfully I have never needed to shop for value, either eat out or eat M&S food. Morrison’s is ok for milk & newspapers.
Go in their one day and buy something and compare. My whole point is that whilst the price of the food is that much cheaper, it is not reflected in the quality of the food. Tbh some of the s*** I see you have on a table Lidl's would be an upgrade.
How do they sell “quality” so cheap then? Their business costs must be the same as non Eastern European supermarkets. Brexit will put an end to Aldi & Lidls, as well as most of the people who use them. #SkinflintPoles
99% of Lidl’s customers are Poles, Romanians and midgets (Labour’s core vote these days) Wouldn’t be seen dead near them. #RollOnBrexit
i'd never been in a aldi or lidl before i moved to blackfen. we use the lidl in welling for when we do get togethers, bbqs, birthdays as it's so damn cheap. my preference is sainsburys, but being where we are we've had to change to tesco and rarely morrisions.
yes! it's a green king pub now, done out quite nicely and serves your battered everything for reasonable prices. booked it for my mums 60th as it goes.
I lived round there for 6 months in the 80s. The Jolly Fenman was my local - famous for its Fenman Dynamite home brew - 3 pints of that and you were bang in trouble. I remember watching the Wimbledon v Liverpool 1988 Cup final with my head down the toilet after a lunchtime trip to the Fenman ...
Lidl does some very good stuff.... their coleslaw with cheese is the best around and there are times when I get in from work and have walked the dog I need something quick and tasty.. their microwave rice and tinned chicken curry goes down a treat.
Don't do Supermarkets. Will drive out of my way to give my money to independent shops. I know it costs me more money but i would prefer it to buying in Tesco's etc. I have never been into Starbuck's, Cafe Nero. I don't eat at Mc Donald's, KFC or Burger King. If I want takeaway food I will order a Curry or have a kebab from my local Indian, Turkish restaurant. I still have a milkman even though it is much cheaper to buy in a supermarket. Supermarkets are the work of the devil. Bring back Fishmongers, Greengrocers etc. Most town centres look the same.
