Saw this thread on OTIB and wanted to gather views on here, as I have read that SoD is a admirer of Killkenny and hope he don't drop Kelly to accommodate once Killkenny is fully fit. Also read on that thread that Del was apparently selling Kilkenny don't know if it was true but just read it.
Liam Kelly is the "NEW" Marvin. Buzzes around mopping up, winning tackes and has the lungs to go up and back all 90 minutes. He is actually making Marv look better than Marv actually is now. Kilkenny; I wish he'd shut his gob and concentrate on playing. Don't think SOD rates him defensively so may only be used when we need to have a go at teams late in matches to get draw/win.
I wouldn't be to disheartened if Marv went now (Although I hope he stays) as I think Kelly, At his age, Will be a brilliant replacement. Ship out Skuse and Kilkenny as well and get a player like Danns in and we should be sorted in the middle, Obviously get another CM in as well as cover but I have no worries that Kelly will become a very important player for us
Kilkenny - NEVER EVER. Kelly - Jury still out. Will be interesting to see who SOD picks in CM when Skuse is fit. ps - SOD will get it right. pps - Shout out for Marv - Steads first and Tangle's goals. Ok, Some Refs would have disallowed Stead's goal but fantastic desire on Marv's part for 'getting there'.
As someone said on another thread, despite some early misplaced passes, Marv grew into yesterday's game and is beginning exhibit some of his early form for us - no doubt aided in large part by Kelly's workrate. No link these 2 up with a decent passing midfielder and we are in business... (p.s. Kelly is another of Del's crap signings....)
"Ok, Some Refs would have disallowed Stead's goal" I'll say, it was a blatant push. Barnsley were very poor in midfield yesterday and Elliot always looks like he is blowing out of his arse to me, but I agree he did grow in to the game.. We still need better. "Kelly is another of Del's crap signings" Suprised by that comment Prem.. think he will be quality for us.
Killkenny is a good passer. In every other aspect I prefer Kelly - I think he may prove to be a good buy
And he came from Noddy land north of Hadrians Wall! Must be crap like all other Scots? Good to see Pearson picking up and I'm still a Foster fan. So not all bad from Scotland eh? Which nationality can some of our posters pick on next? Welsh, Irish, Ghanaian, English, Martian?
I dont rate either. Kilkenny looked half decent at Leeds but cant pass the ball forward and loses it too often. As for Kelly i just dont rate him. Ive not seen anything from him to make me think wow. Doesnt put in that many tackles if u compare him to Skuse and as for going forward he doesnt get forward and when he does we saw against barnsley that he didnt hit the target. For me id rather see Reid put in the team and given a chance as he has a great goal scoring record at u21 and reserve level and in the odd few times he played for the senior team he has got forward and looked dangerous. Any decent team has midfielders who can chip in a few goals a season and neither Kelly or Kilkenny are goalscoring midfielders. If only we had a player like Peter Whittingham (cardiff) or Owen Garven (palace)
Heres a couple more crap signings Ayteo Gow Ritchie p.s. Kelly is a proper tackler, shores up the worst defence in English football which is no mean feat, and showed his range of passing with the super ball to Stead which almost presented Davies with the first goal on Saturday
Andy - thats wierd. Up 'til now I had thought you an astute judge of players, but this has shaken my confidence in you. The only thing he goofed on against Barnsley was that embarrasing finish. I have a feeling he will be working on that aspect of his game this week. Gerry Gow, the finest midfielder this club has produced bar non also had similar finishing in his early days, but anyone who saw his goal against Liverpool at Anfield (1979 I think) or his life saver against Coventry in 1977 would say he well nailed it ! I fully expect Kelly to do the same. Kelly is the player Bristol City have been crying out for for so long I cant remember, and it will be a pleasure to watch him develop over the next few years. Kilkenny ? He comes from Australia doesn't he ? A bit like Carle (remember he ?)
IMO Killkenny can't play in a 4 man midfield otherwise it gets over-run (as happened late on during the Barnsley game)
We arent always going to agree on everything as we all see things differently. I stand by what I believe (not saying its right) I havent seen anything from Kelly yet that says he was worth buying him but I think some of that is down to the current style of football. Too often the ball is either hit long or its played down the wings which misses out the centre of midfield. This is another issue when we play Albert that 99% of our play goes to Albert and then we wonder why they stick 3 players on him as it is too predictable. Kelly is young and has potential to be a good player however at the time and I still feel now that we could have spent that fee on a needed defender and used players like Reid in midfield that were already at the club who could have done the same job as Kelly does now. I also think that we should completely judge any players until they have had a season that starts with a pre season. And Kilkenny hopefully will be shown the door come the summer but SOD seems to like him as a player
