A very fair, well-written assessment. Optimistic, too!

    My exact thoughts.

However, I felt a very strong message to give the new players, especially "the foreigners", time to adapt.

Good read and nice to think of the R's as being sensible in their dealings.........

Now Villa, Newcastle are a different story altogether, how satisfying would it be to see them miss out on an immediate return to the cash cow that is the Premier League? Talking of which I know they've all getting an obscene amount from Sky but just throwing ludicrous amounts of fees at average players is just nonsense........DT was right, football will eat itself......

Nonsense. I reserve my right to boo if they aren't reminiscent of the 1970 Brazil team by half time in the next game.

But buried away amid all the optimism is the comment that he hopes that Furlong will return ready for the Championship next season. Which means that despite the sensible approach he and most other observers expect us to be treading water for some time. Given the disaster of recent seasons I suppose we should be happy with such a long term rebuilding approach but I still think there is something in-between this kind of thrift and the horrendous waste we have witnessed.

Think of it this way. If you went to the bookies, nobody is odds on for promotion or relegation so realistically everyone should expect to be in the Championship next season.

That's not to say we shouldn't hope for more just not expect it. We're just basing hope on the team growing into something more, working hard and getting some breaks rather than an expectation that 5 to 10 million quid's worth of ego will deliver success (which Villa and Newcastle are counting on).

I enjoy hope over expectation too.

Totally agree. I hope the real ambition is promotion this season. A tough ask but not impossible. That we have kept Caulker and probably even without wanting to, Sandro, plus the 2 brought in the last 2 days, suggest that is the target. As it should be.
