Liverpool are the latest team to be linked with Brazilian full back Gerson Magrao, after Aston Villa and Sporting Braga were rumoured to be making moves by Portuguese publication Abola. The quest of Kenny Dalglish to bring a new left sided defender to Anfield has certainly been well documented, but Magrao has not been mentioned nearly as often as the likes of Aly Cissokho and Jose Enrique. The 26 year-old Gerson Magrao is an exciting force on the left. Strong in defence, but also potent in an attacking role on the left wing, he is thought to be available for less than £5m, which could make him the bargain signing of the summer transfer window. Magrao has plenty of UEFA Champions League experience, and would be ready to slot straight into the Reds team. Could he solve Liverpool's left back woes?
Has anybody actually counted just how many players we have been linked with since the window opened? It's just tiresome.
Not sure how many Liverpool have been linked with, but on the Utd site the gossip column says we've been linked with 84 players and a grand total of £1.18 billion in signings this summer. Given Liverpool have been linked with even more than us, I reckon Figo is right and you must be over 100 by now! It's amazing how creative journos can get when they can't just bug people's phones to get the info they want...
It is truely pathetic. It's not as if the journos are going to pressurise any club into either buying or selling. One interesting point is that they are now being found out when it comes to fees. They don't appear to appreciate that the current financial climate effects clubs (with maybe the exception of City) just as much as it does every family! Supporters are just as bad. Throwing around £20 million + figures as if clubs can merely put their hands in their pockets and fish out some loose change!!!
Yeah but they will probably pressure gullible people into buying their papers for fear of missing out on the one rumour that might actually be true... I dunno - clubs are still boosting their commercial revenues from global areas like Asia which are less vulnerable to the financial climate. The fact that Utd and Liverpool were so happy to spend eight figure sums on players that arguably won't play crucial roles in their teams next season (mainly Jones and Henderson) implies that they are still willing and able to throw that sort of money around.
Certainly some of our fans have had a lesson that it's not all about a rounded-up transfer fee. A free can still cost you plenty.
I just googled the guy and on wiki apparently he has played less than 60 games since 2008. And appearances before then were even more scarce, and he is now 26...No thanks.
The other side of that coin is that all clubs are actively engaged in housekeeping. For example United have done that with Brown and O'Shea. It is no secret that Liverpool are trying to reduce their wage bill. Also, it's harder to ammortise a large fee -eapecially for an established player when the time frame is now reduced to 3 years! Add to that the premium that clubs will have to pay on interest rates when paying large fees. It's the big dilema of this age - there's shedloads of liquidity but nobody has got any money.
