I assume the gutter press are a tad upset that England have qualified for the World Cup as it seems they are YET AGAIN attempting to derail another England manager. Why the hell has Roy Hodgson got to apologise for this? He has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG. The KickitOut Campaign once again look like idiots for clamouring for an 'investigation' and whoever the player or staff member is who blabbed to the press about this is, as far as I'm concerned, the one who has something to answer for, the horrible little snitch.

The press deserve a big <doh> for this. Utterly pathetic.

it was a good analogy for what he wanted but it seems some of the people in the dressing room are living up to the stereotype that footballers aren't the brightest

Now the association of black lawyers will get involved and it will drag on and on. You can't say anything these days. It's crazy.

What I want to know is how anyone in the media found out about what happened in the privacy of the dressing room? Who exactly is the whistle-blower/mole and why the **** did they feel the need to open their ****ing mouths and make a story out of absolutely nothing.

Makes me sick, it honestly does.

I don't think the England team will need the press to derail their World Cup campaign, it will just happen naturally.

Assuming it was a player, why on earth did they not speak to Roy, one of the other management team members, of the Pfa? There are probably other options too
Totally bizarre ringing up the editor of the Scottish sun

The press always claim to serve the public and report on the issues that really matter but they're only really there to make money and they'll do that any way they can, even if it means attempting to tarnish Roy after he just got England qualified for the world cup! It really does boggle the mind how some of this tripe gets printed!

The only interesting story in this is how it got to the press in the first place

I wouldn't blame Roy if he told them to stick their bloody job, and then walked out on them.

I wonder if the papers were irritated because they were looking forward to creating a vast **** storm when we didn't qualify, took the opportunity to try and at least take the shine off the achievement.

If you are in the media spotlight these days it is almost impossible to say anything that cannot be twisted to their advantage. They will always seek sensationalism from the most inoffensive remark.

Unless of course you're Harry Redknapp, in which case in the eyes of the media you can do or say no wrong.

Anyone hear him lying through his teeth on 5Live the other night? There was a lengthy interview with him when he claimed he might not even have accepted the England job if offered because he was enjoying himself so much at Spurs (yeah right <doh>), he said that Roy Hodgson was definitely the right choice for England and he had no problem at all with his appointment (yeah right <doh>), he said he hates the media spotlight and all the attention it brings (yeah right <doh>) and he even went as far as to say how amazed he has been that people have been so interested in his book (despite hawking it in the Daily Hate, on Jonathan Ross, and er in the actual interview he was giving at the time <doh>)

I take the point and appreciate I am sort of playing devil's advocate here, but I think Hughton gets it absolutely right:

“I’m led to believe that there have been statements from Roy and the FA and I am quite sure that in the manner of what was said there was no intent to abuse anybody. We are in a different age now and we are very conscious these days of racial issues. Perhaps we are living in times when you have to be very, very careful what you say at any given time but I would reiterate knowing Roy as I do there would not have been any offence meant.

“Having said, that I think it is a good thing that in general terms we have reached the stage where incidents reach the press that years ago would never have been mentioned - that means there are far more people conscious of the issues. We have made great strides over the years and to maintain that good progress everyone has to work hard and I think there has to be an awareness about people’s actions.
”

I've said time and again on here that people need to be careful ALL THE TIME and it's no surprsie that it is, repeatedly, the same word causing problems.

in most cases i would agree rob but not in this case as there is literally no case to answer! as far as i'm concerned, anyone who felt there was 'an issue' with what roy hodgson said is the one who has the problem because they have turned something with NO racist connotations into something that does.

I'm sorry but I actually disagree with Hootun here, he talks of there being "far more people conscious of the issues" when in fact there was no issue here in the first place.

As I said, partially playing Devil's Advocate, but also there's no need for a drawn out debate on this because it is a complex issue. All I really think that needs to be weighed up is:
(1) the English press seem to have displayed a distinct anti-Hodgson (and anti-FA) agenda since Redknapp missed out on the job
(2) it seems that a certain member of the playing staff (various rumours) also have an axe to grind
(3) everyone, and I mean everyone, irrespective of the medium used, and particularly those in positions of responsibility, needs to be VERY careful what they say - "I was misinterpreted" is not always going to work and is not always an excuse. This is the sorry state we live in
(4) it is good that people are conscious of the issue, even if the issue has not arisen here (which is what Hughton is actually saying) - this is the wrong thing to come down on, but it is fair to say we are now more conscious of racism and this is a good thing.
