Looking back this time last year we were lauding our new director of football, head scout and at the time exciting transfer policy of buying affordable continentals. Fast forward to now once bitten by the unknown foreign markets and having learnt the lessons of employing a middle aged man with highlights we have Lee Congerton a unassuming quiet welshman who comes with pedigree of working with football alan b'stard Frank Arnesen. So with last years folly in mind we should have expected the club to be naturally more calculated in the market this time, but patience is wearing thin as more main targets reject us by the day and the panic buy window slowly starts to creek open. It leave me at least hoping we havent been taken in by another snake oil peddler
I tell you what I am totally exasperated! In fact I'd go as far to say that my exaspers have never been so rated!!! How many times am I gonna be led to believe that a key target is virtually about to sign on the dotted line, I leave my computer only to come back a few hours later with expectations of progress, only to have them dashed!!!
As far as I'm aware, Lee Congerton is at Sunderland because Poyet knows him from their Chelsea days and recommended him to Ellis Short as DoF. His experience with the likes of Mourinho, Villa-Boas, Arnsesen and Brendan Rodgers at Chelsea and Hamburg lets you know he is capable and respected in football. A snake oil salesman he certainly isn't. I think we may find the biggest drawback to Congerton attracting the next level footballer, is that we are little Sunderland. Outside the UK we are not much of an attraction...no one knows us. This will be our greatest battle.
Always been the case when it comes to attracting anyone. That's why I want Boro to do well, so we can get a little hub going for the North again.
For two seasons, with Laudrup at the helm, and a trophy in the cabinet, HE attracted a couple of bargains. Had you heard of Michu or Bony beforehand? Both want out now anywho, but the point is I don't think they have attracted any big players - I think Laudrup and his team knew a good buy when they saw one.
I'm not talking about big players because like you say clubs like us can't but I'm talking about decent players & by the looks of it we are struggling with that. I heard about Bony, De Guzman, Sigurdsson, Gomis & Shelvey but teams like Swansea buy them & we can't.
It's all relative. Shelvey (who I don't rate) is only down the road from home, Gomis I've yet to see (could be the next Bony), De Guzman is a loanee (Laudrup was his old boss before Swansea) and not there now, Bony wants a bigger team after a good season, and I can only presume Sigurdsson has a Welsh misses Now that Cardiff are back down I reckon Monk will have no end of worries trying to sign any players.
I rather have Shelvey than ****ing bridcock & Larsson like. I think Swansea are trying to sign De Guzman again but I maybe wrong.
