I know some of you lads like games so I thought we could discuss tactics when playing these two particular games from my own younger days.

What do you do when you throw the dice and you know it is going to be disastrous?

I usually "accidently" knock the board and scatter the counters all over the floor.

Is there a more sophisticated and strategic way of approaching this kind of disaster.

Does this tactic work with FIFA 13 or Football Manager 2012?

    Or maybe you prefer Monopoly?

My daughters liked games especially skipping so what is popular with you lads?

Do you still play British Bulldog or has Health and Safety done for that?

British Bulldog was banned in my SENIOR school!

Played monopoly the other night with friends though, the banker ended up being held hostage and once freed was forced to pay out several 500 pound notes...

I do enjoy the strategic battle that is 'Hungry Hippos'. In many ways it is like the more sophisticated cousin of Chess. It's a relentless fight to the death, sort of, where only the strong-willed can compete against the sheer volumnity of some of those beasts' gargantuan appetites, as they try with all their majestic strength to 'gobble-up us as many balls as they can'. Ah, happy days.

FM10 is the best FM I have, though I'm led to believe FM08 was simply awesome...

As for other games, I'm rather keen on Categorically Speaking.

Trivial Pursuit, but not the newer versions...there's too much pop culture nonsense. Much prefer the early/mid 80s version, which inevitably ended up with me getting all but the pink (Entertainment) pie pieces, and then spending three hours guessing Steve McQueen/Ingrid Bergman/The Maltese Falcon for every answer until one thankfully proved to be correct.

You can't beat modern school sports.

    Soft pillow catching (headgear essential)
Casual strolling (everyone gets a prize)
Teddy bear throwing (can be combined with soft pillow catching if time is short)
Relay doughnut passing (winning team eats the lot)
    The not too high jump
The low jump (to encourage inclusivity)

    Can hardly contain the excitement.

Monopoly will be banned soon as it encourages entrepreneurialism and capitalism..... and heaven help us if we encourage any of that!

You can't beat Subbuteo. My 11 year old plays it and his mates love it when they come round.

Monopoly should be banned for being the longest and most tedious game ever invented. Plus everyone has their own weird rules.

This is a bit of a sob story designed to get you young lads of today to understand how hard it was for us old codgers when we were kids.

We used to play cowboys and indians for hours with just an old piece of wood which we pretended was a rifle.

Our Vicar was a great man and kept a bat, ball and wickets for us boys to borrow but only if we went to church on Sunday.

We had a pack of cards at home with which we used to play donkey and horse and carriage.

We had a rich kid in the village who had a real football (with laces) and when he appeared with it we would have games of football lasting hours with 20 or more people per team. I always insisted my team was called Moscow Dynamo.

We had a compendium of board games one Christmas that kept us amused for hours and when my oldest brother started work he bought a chess set which he said my little brother and I could use when he was out.

Most of the time though my friends and I were out on our bikes (old bone shakers knocked together from old bike parts by our dads) or else on carts made from old pram parts.

The one thing I remember from my childhood is that we were almost never indoors unless it was absolutely tipping down with rain.

PS We would never have been taken to a football match as kids because me and most of my friends played for the school or our village team.
