They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. http://www.flickr.com/photos/richjjones/7367089436/
Excellent tribute, the final post showing the twelve players who lost their lives is very moving. Today's pampered pro's don't know how lucky they are...
What a superbly observed act of remembrance. Some properly bowed heads amongst the players , especially Junior. This is the Canadian War Memorial at Ypres, one which has always struck me as very poignant.
Harry Patch has a point and reflects my views on wars. Having said that, I respect all victims of war.
A big up also to the Black Cab drivers who hang about after the parades, to give the veterans a free ride home. Nice gesture lads and ladies.
I agree Stainesy, great gesture. They were officialy recognised as the best cab drivers in the world this week.
London taxi drivers have been voted the world's best for 6 years running. Dublin taxi drivers were voted the friendliest.
Today I am remembering by Grandfather (WWI - RE), who died 1961 and my Father (WWII - 3rd County of London Yeomanry - Sharpshooters), who passed away Sept 6th, 1993, both lifelong R's, as am I. Dad was one of a close group of four friends, who sometimes used to take trips over to continental Europe together in the 1930's - I have photos of them, young guys in white summer jackets, baggy pants, lots of girls around - Dad was the only one of that group of friends to make it through WWII alive - one in RAF shot down in a Spitfire (I have a very sad letter from his widow to Dad written during the war), another, Ollie, KIA after D-Day in a Sherman tank mounted with the larger 17 pounder gun (one per tank troop), which presented a different profile on the horizon and would be picked out first for destruction by the Germans. I still have a letter where Ollie writes to Dad a couple of weeks before he was killed, where he proudly says, "tremendous with the larger gun we finally have a fighting chance against the German tanks - brewed 2 Tigers yesterday". Actually while looking for something else yesterday in my desk (that was my Dad's 21st birthday present from his parents in 1937), I came upon a couple of Dad's newsy letters sent to me in Canada, and noted that he had a little mention about QPR at the bottom of each letter. 24 Jan 1989 - "We lost last night 3-0 to Man Utd after a 2nd FA Cup replay - 5 reserves playing!" - I checked the record book (attached), and we certainly got our fill of Man Utd that 1988-89 season, playing them 5 times, 3 times in the FA Cup, but I note that was the only game they beat us. The "5 reserves" mention - was that perhaps us throwing in the towel in the FA Cup to concentrate on the League? So obviously no FA Cup penalty shoot-outs back then? 8 Sept 1992 (one year before he passed away) - "4th in the Premier League, COYR's, the top London side!" - obviously very proud of his team, as will I be, when I take my place at Loftus Road for the Charlton match on Nov 23rd.
