The centre backs are both struggling with injuries and that leaves their manager with a major headache.

Lescott - a summer arrival from Manchester City - has had a knee injury while experienced McAuley is only just back in training after calf trouble.

Irvine only has two natural central defenders left in Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson - but both underperformed in Tuesday's 3-2 friendly defeat at Port Vale.

The Scot said: "We've been short at the back all the way through. We've been trying to find a way to get a team out on the pitch but I'm probably not the only manager who is in that position at the moment.

"We do have options because Chris Baird can play there if we had a problem with Jonas or Craig Dawson. Chris can play centre back and so can Andre Wisdom."

Bad crack if you're struggling to get a team out first game. Happy days for us though. :D

    shame.

Im surprised at how poor Olsen was last season for WBA, was always pretty solid for the last few years IMO

I think WBA are shocking and Gus should be telling the lads that a 3 point flyer is a minimum requirement.

Having Lescott missing is massive as he remains a genuine quality CB, but we should be able to get at them all over the park.

Can't ****ing wait for it me like, a win then a packed house for United, could get the season off in great fashion.

I thought the same about fulham last year, but we lost to them when we really didnt deserve it. West brom seem to have some hoodoo over us at the hawthorns, can never seem to play well when we're there
