Yeah I must tell the one about why the queen was late again. Maybe it was because her husband was rushed to hospital. Or the will all the black people in the crowd raise their hands. Oh look there's 3 of you. That is comedy gold.Rolf Harris should have gave you a slap for interrupting his singing as well. Surely we can dig up another funny faux comedian, rio Ferdinand?

Problem is, he's become a "British Institution", and when that happens with all the game show appearances, reality TV participation and 'serious project' programming that this entails, mainstream dullness takes over. Look at Ben Elton, Billy Connolly, Jo Brand - what was once cutting edge is now safe scissors.

He's a very fine actor, but who's interested? He was once a comedian, and that's where, in the public's perception, he'll stay - like a fly preserved in amber.

Jo Brand now that is one person I really cannot stand - female chauvinist
    Ben Elton - tiresome lefty

    Billy Connolly - ok bearable

as for Lenny do not mind him but was a bit rude to Rolf, well more than a bit rude, thought it was just banter at first but not so sure.

The reality is he ticks the right boxes for lazy out of touch beeb executives. He is so dated and was awful, making racist imperialist references that were cringey embarrasing, yesterday I was half expecting him to appear in a lion skin shouting Katanga my friend!! An idiot and a twat that spoilt a historical event with his pathetic 'look at me im unique cos im black' act. Yes Len. You are. You should have walked away gracefully when the more talented tiswas presenters were overlooked. (inc jim Davidson)

ive also read the reviews he has had for his acting and they say what I already knew, that he tries too hard.

Rob Brydon was good. Peter Kay was funny. They had a sense of timing, reverence and place.

    You mean these ones?

"This is one of the most astonishing debuts in Shakespeare I have ever seen. It is impossible to praise too highly Henry's courage in taking on so demanding and exposed a role, and then performing it with such authority and feeling" - Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph

"Henry's voice may not always measure up to the rhetorical music of the verse, but there is a simple dignity to his performance that touches one: not least in his final confession when he sits on the corpse-laden bed lamenting his fate before wrenching a hidden dagger from its wooden post." - Michael Billington, The Guardian

"This is a serious production in which Lenny Henry shows he has the guts combined with the determination and skill to tackle something well outside the scope of his comic endeavours. And though this isn't one of the great Othellos of all time, it's a memorable production in part because Lenny Henry is authoritative and convincing but also because it's not simply a one man show – the rest of the cast shine just as much as their leading man." - Peter Brown, London Theatre

"The Trafalgar Studios are filled with anticipation of Lenny Henry’s entrance – what kind of Othello will he be? Can the funny man actually pull it off? Only time will tell. What I can tell you is yes he does pull it off and he is one of the finest Othello’s I’ve seen" - Sophia Jackson, Afridiziak Theatre News

    You were saying?

Lenny Henry reviews for cradle to rave, hardly . Take a look at those reviews including all the ones for his tv work. Chef or the Lenny Henry show or better still type Lenny Henry is not funny and see the results. According to wiki the evening standard dEscribed his work "as something only forensic science may be able to discover humour in it" oh dear. Given the wealth of poor reviews I would say that I am being very generous in describing his acting "as tries too hard"

He might have pulled off a decent othello although this may only appeal to some fawning 80s throwback who has a thing for frank spencer impersonators but I am afraid this man has no talent. I remember extras with Ricky gervais made reference to his legendary unfunny status.

We are all entitle to our own view as you are yours. To me none of the comedians got it right withe the exception of Peter Kay and even he managed to get the name of the person he was introducing wrong.
The people who really got it wrong were the BBC who left the control desk in the hands of a work experience employee who decided to try and induce epilepsy in the viewing audience by not holdin to a single camera for more than two seconds for the first twenty minutes. This is probably because they have made all their expeirenced control desk staff redundant when they moved to Media city on the licence payers money.
What with everything else they got wrong over the weekend we should consider giving the job to the Sky team who were at least professional - and that from someone who hates the Murdoch empire.

Is there not a contradiction in there? The fact is, many theatre critics, who will have seen many Othellos in their time, have generally judged his performance to be outstanding. And you say he has no talent.

You don't find him funny, fine, that's your view. I happen to think he is funny, not the best comedian out there perhaps, but still someone capable of making me laugh.
