defender Brian Lenihan has received a shock call-up for the Republic of Ireland ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifier with Gibraltar on Saturday.

The 20-year-old right-back has not made a senior appearance for the Tigers since signing from Cork City five weeks ago but will meet up with team-mates David Meyler, Stephen Quinn and Robbie Brady in Martin O’Neill’s ranks this evening.

Injury to regular right-back Seamus Coleman has left O’Neill with limited options for the role and he has opted to hand Lenihan his chance to impress.

O’Neill said this morning: “We’re going to bring up young Brian Lenihan at Hull because we don’t have any natural right-back in the team at the moment

He will come in later on today and he will train with us tomorrow. I haven't (seen much of him). The reports have been fine, absolutely. Speaking to some of the lads here at Hull, they say he has settled in well. He is delighted to be coming.”

Lenihan’s most recent run-out came in City’s Premier League under-21s Cup win at Burnley last Monday as he makes a quiet start to life in England.

As well as the home game with Gibraltar this weekend, the rookie is also likely to be in the squad that travels to face World Cup winners Germany a week today.

Well done lad. Plays in midfield doesnt he........

He can play both. We bought him as a RB I think although some of the Cork fans think he has more potential in MF. How much did we pay for him....250k. Another great piece of business by Brucie.

Is this a Irish version of what happens with Hodgson and England?

Hodgson picks young players who’ve hardly played never mind been fully blooded because they’ve come through, or are in, the ranks at a big club like Utd or Arsenal. He does this at the expense of more seasoned professionals.

Here we have MON picking a highly rated youngster from a rising Premier League club who is similarly unproven in the top flight as the crop touted or picked for England.

It’s great for Lenihan and great for us as even without him playing he’s already looking a bargain.

Unfortunately for McShane, I think Keane and MON probably hold the reputation of years gone by against him despite his maturity or marked improvement over the last three years.
