Shrewsbury are away to Leicester for the second round of the League Cup after town beat Blackpool at home in the first round. Leicester are the new boys in the Premier League after gaining promotion last season as champions. They've only spent one season out side of the top two tiers in their existence so will always be a tough team to play. Perhaps they're not the most popular of picks that town could have come across in the draw but they are Premiership and as they have just played Chelski and have Arsenal next Sunday we have a slight window of opportunity to get a scalp as their eyes will be off the ball. Interesting or not so useful Leicester facts: In 1841 Thomas Cook organised the world’s first package tour from Leicester - it went just up the road to Loughborough for a temperance meeting. For just a shilling each, the 570 temperance activists got their rail travel and food on the journey. Famous people include Gok Wan, Sue Townsend, Graham Chapman, Joseph Merrick and Gary Lineker Leicester have drawn against Everton 2-2 coming from behind each time with Forwards Ulloa and his sub Wood getting the goals but the team only managed 37% possession against them with three shots on target besides the goals. In the Chelsea game Ulloa started again with Wood replacing him. I guess we might see Wood start on Tuesday? I think Wood was the player Wolves tried to sign. Leicester also only managed 37% possession in this game too but failed to get a goal despite four shots on target. Leicester have Jamie Vardy, Matt Upson, Danny Drinkwater and Matty James still with injury concerns and Marc Albrighton got twenty minutes on Saturday. Town had a challenging game on Saturday against Northampton with a red card for an ideal midfielder experience wise in Lawrence. Vincent also took a knock so is looking doubtful. Ellis is still out for a while. I'm guessing Town will start with a similar squad to Saturday, possibly with Woods and Weso in midfield, JLAA on the wing with Collins and Vernon up front. Town, on the books, should have a tough game, but looking at a few forums and comments by 'friends of the physio' etc, it might well be that we end up playing a second string squad with sprinkling of first teamers in the squad or on the bench. So we might well nick it, or at least those with a betting habit could go for a 'Collins as first scorer' bet! Hopefully we can get a win and get a bigger team away in the next round with some TV coverage to get those coffers filled. Leicester 1 v 2 Shrewsbury, Collins, Clark. This was populated yet, but will be soon I guess: http://www.shrewsburytown.com/fixtures-results/match-preview/index.aspx?matchid=3769721 http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/274618-Team-V-Shrewsbury - Leicester fan's predictions of squad http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/273236-Shrewsbury-Home - comments about getting us in the cup
We could rest a few ourselves given we have a more important match against Luton coming up on Saturday. However I do not expect too many changes from the norm and perhaps we will see Collins, Akpro and Mangan playing together at the start. I would not replace Vincent with Caton as Caton still looks a bit raw though his pace might be useful from off the bench. I think Leicester may play a reasonably strong side as they have not won yet this season. Lets hope they fall into the same trap that Derby and Swansea did a few seasons back. I will go for 1-1 after extra time with Town prevailing on penalties after some Leutwiler heroics. I am looking forward to this and hope we can take at least 1000 with us and make it a good atmosphere like at Stoke a few seasons back.
are there any big clubs left to play in 3rd round. we have a cup run on our hands. MMM Mickey Mellon's Marvels! Floreat Salopia!. just going to warm Leicesters boards a little. appears Man Utd need another new Manager!!
Absolutely magnificent - one of my best ever Shrewsbury nights. We played them off the pitch at times with controlled passing football and Leicester could not have complained if it was 2-0 or 3-0. No Man of the Match for me - we had fourteen of them on the pitch tonight. Deafening support helped with every throw in for us at the end greeted with a standing ovation. We deserve this after the trials and tribulations of last season and if we start taking a few more chances someone is in for a real hammering from us soon. It was also great to see Johnny Taylor sat in the crowd supporting his old team - top man.Floreat Salopia!
Agree with all the above. Sat with a Leicester supporting friend who was impressed and felt we should walk our league (Fingers crossed with that, though).
Glad you had a good time, sounded great. Wesolowski seemed to work his socks off in midfield. What was Vernon like when he came on. Great to hear Taylor was in crowd. Was he in away end or somewhere more salubrious?
http://www.lcfc.com/fixtures-results/match-report/?matchid=3769721&tcmuri=1839856 Nice write up, with positives for town. http://www.shrewsburytown.com/news/article/26aug14-ft-leicester-0-1-town-1877191.aspx Report by town http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28846954 BBCs
Matster, Vernon worked hard but looked off the pace a bit (not surprising given his lack of game time) and missed a sitter after Collins hit the post. Taylor was a few rows behind me in the away end trying to be inconspicuous in a white baseball cap but not succeeding very well as the children around were asking for his autograph. I was very interested to see Grandison playing as sweeper. Nat and Connor seemed very comfortable alongside him and it allowed Micky and Cameron to really bomb on as wing backs - that means we were effectively playing with three at the back.
