The word "Legend" seems to be bandied about with ease on numerous threads on this board. What does the word mean to you, who is your footballing legend and why?
Well in my lifetime the true legends of the game have been Pele, Cryuff - Best - Moore - Beckembaur - Law - Charlton - Greaves to name but a few. They all played when defenders could almost do what they wanted to stop you. Unlike now where its almost basketball rules. When you saw the likes of Ron Chopper Harris ready to cut George Best in half and was made to look stupid was great to watch. Laterly, Ian Ashbee for what he did @ Hull City. To play for - Capt. and score for Hull City in all 4 leagues is a FIRST and i shall be surprised if its ever equalled. For sure it wont be bettered. Thats my take on the word LEGEND.
Before Windass, Ashbee and others the greatest legend at City is still Raich Carter. He picked up this club after Hull was bombed flat in the war and gave us a team to be proud of. From the Tigers History thread: "Managed by former England international Horatio (Raich) Stratton Carter, City won the Division Three (North) highlighted by an attendance of 49,655 for their top of the table clash at home to Rotherham United on Christmas Day, it was a Divisional record that still stands. 55,019 spectators packed into Boothferry Park to see Manchester United defeat the Tigers 1-0 in a closely fought cup battle." and "Actually, City sold 55,000 tickets for the Rotherham game, which is a record for any 3rd level match. They had over 70,000 postal applications for the game. The reason 55,000 weren't there was a transport strike." Just imagine how much excitement there must have been in the city for HCAFC to get 50,000 on Christmas day for a league match, remembering that those people suffered worse than anyone throughout WW2. and it was largely due to player / manager Carter. If anyone doubts he was our greatest hero I suggest you read more about him, you will soon see what I mean.
For me City legends - Carter and Viggo Jensen (both well before my time) Waggy, Chillo, Ash and Stuart Elliott.
For me Bullard for trying to bring down the system!!! But not city wise, city wise it would have to be marney or ***an, they epitomised our club for the time I supported city before our rise up the leagues, lots of energy and potential but achieved nothing.
