LW has been a problem for us this season. We appear to have solutions available to us, but haven't made use of Montenegro, and Walters is untried. Most people (apparently including Redders) seem to thinka loan or two is the answer. This article comes from the left field, and I think it's worth sharing. (apologies for the dots, but the chart didn't ant to transfer intact) Thoughts? http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2015...eds-uniteds-answer-to-the-left-wing-problem/? Leeds United have managed to solve one of their problems in wide areas by switching Sam Byram's position, so could they do the same with Charlie Taylor? Byram has shone since converting from right-back to right-wing, scoring two goals in his last three games to help the club climb up the table. Neil Redfearn lamented the side's lack of balance in the weekend defeat against Brentford, with Billy Sharp ineffective out wide, explaining ahead of the Reading clash to LUTV that he was still looking at a couple of wide players. If that proves fruitless, the prospect of playing Taylor out wide could yet become a valid one. ...................... Key Passes per game Passing Accuracy Crossing Accuracy Beating A Player Accuracy Sam Byram.........0.88................................79%..........................20%................................32% Charlie Taylor.....0.57..................................70%............................39%................................55% While Byram outperforms him in terms of chances created per game and passing accuracy, Taylor's crossing and dribbling success rate is better. Both are key attributes for a winger, and as for who takes over at left-back, there is a solution thanks to Gaetano Berardi. Berardi only missed being part of the squad at Reading due to illness, and has featured adeptly at left-back already this season. There is every chance he could replicate a similar role as Scott Wootton is doing at right-back, and allow Taylor to get forward and flourish. If Leeds can get a fresh face in then that is the obvious answer, but if they have to make the best of what they have, asking Taylor to emulate Byram could be the smartest solution.
Hmm, havent seen enough of taylor to make my mind up about this. When I have seen him he does seem to like to attack but I do like my attacking fullbacks. One thing I will say is that those stats are probably not entirely relevant given that Byram has played considerably more games therefore has taken on more people and put more crosses into the box maybe resulting in lower percentage. (Just me, I really don't like football stats)
WJ, Stats for me tell a lot about a player, their strengths, weaknesses, consistency, brilliant, mediocre or crap. People who make these stats up also work hard to make'em as accurate as possible. No doubt Byram is playing better than he did at RB, to many players getting round and behind him at RB, not a patch on when he first began playing for Leeds. Key passes......0.88 per game. This says he's not doing it every game, and should be. For a mid / winger, we should be reading at least 3 to 4 for a normal game. Passing accuracy......79%, this is obviously not per game but overall. Can be deceiving if they don't include the total number of attempted passes made. Out of 100, means 79 are accurate but 21 are going astray somewhere. Crossing accuracy......20%, not really very good for someone playing the winger role, but, somewhere in that 20% could be the crosses that lead to the vital goals; still very low though considering a LB who runs the line has a better crossing accuracy (Redders mentioned Taylor is our best crosser of the ball), 39% does not suggest that. Beating a player accuracy......for a mid/winger this is actually low, as we can see by Taylors same stats. A mid / winger should be beating players far more than 32% of the time, what's happening the other 68% of the time, and how much of the 68% are leading to the opposition turning them into attacks. Byram is still young and can improve, and needs to improve cos most PL teams will leave him floundering. Redders once said Cook made 4 tackles against Forest, he played brilliantly and was MOM. I laughed at it as a joke and said to myself, what was he doing for the rest of the game. Our defenders make far more than 4 tackles in a game and they don't get any plaudits, especially Cellino signings. This is where Redders for me talks balls and purposely sets about deceiving the fans, and the players. Taylor is young, he's getting better but will have blips. For a defender / winger, he's outshining Byram despite the lower key pass accuracy. Key passes and crosses are essential to a defender and a mid, it's what our strikers rely on and feed off. To add what Josh mentioned, Byram has played more games than Taylor and, like Josh said, would create an unfair comparison, but to further add, they also show Taylor is doing a good job, only more games will show how his stats change for the better or worse.
I have never been worried about Taylor as you can verify WJ having seen him play in a pre season friendly with you and if you read my post on the breakfast debate today tyou will see I had the same idea only playing Cooper at left back and Beradi instead of Wooton who I dont rate as a full back Taylor is going to be a very good player and it speaks volumes when Warnock has not been missed
You made me think about this lads. Perhaps the stats would have been clearer if Byrams had been split into appearances at RB, and appearances at RM. We'd then have been able to compare the two at FB, and compare Byram's stats at RB & RM. The picture might be a little clearer then.
I agree, less pressure to beat a player at full back, also the crosses from fullback tend to be from deeper positions.
I see why this thread is worth debating, but I personally think that Taylor is really rather good at left back and we dont really have any other left backs (Cooper and berardi perhaps, but not ideal). Before we try Taylor on left wing, we MUST give Montenegro a proper chance. I mean, Redders is prepared to give Morison time and he hasnt been fantastic but has shown to be a steady choice, so why not Montenegro?? We are crying out for a proper left winger, but not only that an advanced one considering the 4-2-3-1 formation. Forgive me if I'm wrong but isnt he a striker/left winger? therefore advanced left could well by a pretty damn good fit! What is redders (not) seeing in training???
I never though Byram was that good at defending so pushing him forward wasn't an issue, Taylor I would prefer to see him kept at LB. Ajose, isn't he left sided and Doukara and Montenegro as pointed out already.
Apologies for reiterating my opinion again but, I think Redders won't use Cellinos signings as much as possible, unless forced. Thing is now, both Bellusci and Sloth played brilliant games against Reading, team to play Millwall should be interesting. I think Orion, it may be a case of what Redders does see, rather than what he doesn't, or, doesn't want to see. He's always talking about width, and he has Monty there, he has Duke there, so why doesn't he give them a chance like he keeps giving the wandering nomad and other players week after week; he's making himself look so obvious. I found this link on the other forum, it's about Redders saying he'll continue making brave selections, he's calling them brave now, maybe he's got fed up of hearing "his favourites" mentioned all time........anyone remember when Redders said he doesn't pick his favourites; I reckon he has sneeky peeks at forums and articles, or Pope does, then asks Redders. You can also listen to Bates interview regarding the winding up of Leeds City Holdings, but not what Eleanora Sports own.
LL, I don't think that Redders would risk his job under a owner who is more than happy to sack after some poor results just because he doesn't like the owner's signings. Only reason I think he hasn't sacked him already is because back then he thought most fans wanted him in charge and since the new year results have turned around for now it seems. He will and is playing the team that he thinks is best at the club imo. we can all debate what team we think is our best and it seems literally everyone has a different opinion on that as we have so many players at the club who all seem to be performing at an equal level with the option of many different formations and tactics. There is no reason to believe that Redders wouldn't have his own opinions that differ.
