Leeds v Swansea Competition - Sky Bet Championship Venue - Elland Road Date - 29 November 2023 Kick off - 7:45pm Following their hard fought 2-2 draw at home against Play-Off hopefuls Hull City, next up for Michael Duff’s Swansea squad is the daunting prospect of a visit to automatic promotion contenders Leeds United - who will look to maintain the Championship's only unbeaten home record thus season. Last Saturday, Hull fought back from 2-0 down to claim a point against the Swans as the Welsh side's poor home form continued. The Swans put themselves on course for just their third Championship win on their own patch this season thanks to first-half goals from Jamie Paterson and Jerry Yates. Paterson's precise finish broke the deadlock, before Ryan Allsop spilled the attacking midfielder's 30-yard drive and Yates tapped in on the rebound. But Michael Duff's team never looked comfortable and Hull deservedly came back into the contest in the second half. Jaden Philogene lashed in a fourth goal in his last six appearances, before Tyler Morton's cushioned volley brought Hull level. Liam Rosenior will feel his team did enough to win, with Liam Delap twice denied by Swans’ goalkeeper Carl Rushworth late on - having seen an earlier effort ruled out for offside. The draw leaves Swansea, who stay 17th, with only two victories in nine games on their own ground so far this season, while Hull climb to seventh having taken 10 points from their last five matches. The previous evening, Leeds missed out on a seventh win in eight Championship matches as they were held to a 1-1 draw by managerless Rotherham United. Crysencio Summerville cut in from the left to curl in an early opener for Leeds but, in a dominant first-half display, they failed to extend their lead further. Against the run of play in first-half stoppage time, Hakeem Odoffin found the bottom corner from 12 yards to equalise for third-from-bottom Rotherham in their first game since Manager Matt Taylor was dismissed. As a result, Leeds remain in 3rd place, 7 points adrift of Ipswich. Swansea and Leeds first met in October 1927 and in the 40 matches played, Leeds have won 21, the Swans 12 with 7 matches drawn. The teams last met at Elland Road in October 2019 in a Championship match when the Swans ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a 90th minute winner by Wayne Routledge: Turning to tomorrow night, Sam Allison will be the man in the middle. Allison – who had a successful playing career in the upper echelons of non-league football - has taken charge of over 100 matches across the EFL leagues and competitions since his promotion to the National List of Referees in 2020. Wednesday’s match will be just his seventh second-tier fixture. So far this season, Allison has taken charge of 11 games in all competitions, handing out 48 yellow cards and one red. He will be assisted Andrew Fox and Mark Stevens, while Stephen Martin will be the fourth official. Leeds will probably have 3 ex-Swans in the team in Joe Rodon, Dan James and Joel Piroe: so that’s 3 goals guaranteed for Leeds! The Swans will hope to have Yannick Bolasie in contention for the trip to Leeds, although this will be subject to EFL and international clearance. In my view, the Swans will have to ride their luck - much as they did 4 years ago - if they are to return to South Wales with anything from the match. I don’t think that will happen ….. 3-1 to Leeds. Hope I’m wrong
If I were a Swansea fan, I’d hate seeing James and Piroe lining up against me. Both to score 2-0 Leeds
It's inevitable. The reality is we're a supplier of players to other clubs and that puts us lower in the food chain. Can't see that changing anytime soon. Can't see us getting anything from this one, 3 - 0.
Josh Key makes his first start for Swansea City since the defeat to Leicester City as Michael Duff makes one change for tonight’s meeting with Leeds United at Elland Road. Key, who returned from a calf injury as a late substitute in the weekend draw with Hull, comes in for Harrison Ashby, who suffered a hamstring injury against the Tigers. The Swans are otherwise unchanged from Saturday, although there is a place for new signing Yannick Bolasie among the substitutes. Carl Rushworth continues in goal, while Key joins Ben Cabango, Bashir Humphreys and Josh Tymon in the Swansea defence. Captain Matt Grimes and Jay Fulton are paired together in midfield, with Jamal Lowe, Jamie Paterson and Ollie Cooper operating ahead of them. Jerry Yates is up top for the Swans, with Liam Cullen on the bench on his return from suspension. The hosts include former Swans Joe Rodon, Dan James and Joel Piroe in their starting line-up. 2 - 1 half time. I've spent most of the half playing spot-the-ball with stuttering feeds but think we've done ok from what I can make out. Very annoying to concede in the 48th minute though. Tough second half coming up.
