Well I think it's safe to say we didn't deserve that! My impressions (could easily be wrong, so feel free to correct me) is that we were on top for the first 20 minutes, before Leeds scored on the counter. Their second was clearly offside and was the goal that killed the game as a contest really - although we did have chances. A mistake from Weale allowed the third and a perhaps slightly contentious penalty call led to the fourth. Although it may look bad, there were encouraging signs. Paddy Kenny made plenty of excellent saves, with Morgan, Parry and Wright all having decent opportunities, as well as us looking threatening from set pieces. The midfield also seemed to play well, although Wright and Parry had little impact after lively starts. However, I get the feeling we badly missed either Jones or Hazell in the backline to add more experience to the team - no real leaders in there. A clinical striker would be nice, but I maintain that we won't sign anyone - we haven't had a real goalscorer under Turner, as the goals have been shared throughout the team - Wright, Richards and Wroe all scored a few and our team is usually based around a talented defence rather than being a free scoring side. Ultimately, we played a better side, away from home and got outplayed. The ref seemed dodgy and luck wasn't quite on our side, but we won't play any team of Leeds' calibre in the League this season. The lads will be closer to 100% match fitness and we won't have a cup run distracting us from the start of the League campaign as we did last season. So well played Leeds. Now, onto my MotM. Summerfield, Purdie and Richards seemed to be the standout performers, and Morgan also seemed to play well but just not score. Plenty of encouragement to be taken all round as well as plenty of aspects in which we need to improve, but central midfield didn't seem to be an issue - I'm going for Summerfield.
Weale was to blame along side Hector that bit of experience at the back was missing , but I don't agree we were outplayed . My man of the match by far was Luke Summerfield.
We should have been 2 up before their first goal, and we had a couple of good chances later on. The penalty was VERY soft, the first goal Weale should have dealt with, the second goal Hector really fluffed - but better now than in a league game. Their third goal was pretty soft - weale reacted a bit late - but all said and done I feel more positive than I should after a 4-0 defeat. Weale needs to sharpen up, the defence needs to have a bit of time together and we need a striker; but it doesn't look too bad - we certainly weren't as bad as the score suggests. Leeds are the league above and we were away from home after all.
nine of the Leeds players have never played together either, but its early days, the game reminded me of the Evesham result, we knocked it about for spells but never really created much, i know Leeds are a league above but i expected us to play a lot better
to quote the old saying-now we concentrate on the league-. god help the blades!. if i thought they had any fans i would try warming their boards up! floreat salopia
Slightly tongue-in-cheek, taken from a famous Leeds forum: So week 1 of the new season saw the visit of Shrewsbury Town In decent voice early doors but once we scored pretty silent - save for bleats about "bad refereeing" Chant of the Day - "Where's your famous atmosphere...." Overall a sorry 4/10 from them..... They also take the early lead in the following two league tables for visiting away fans TIME OF FIRST... "We all hate Leeds scum" - 1 Minute 42 Seconds (A strong early season pace setter) "Neil Warnock Is A ****er....." - 4 Minutes 2 Seconds (Maybe setting a fair early pace) Let's see if Wolves can better them......
Obviously not that quiet then !!! I thought our fans did us proud singing throughout the game even when 4 down.
