Lee Johnson explains why Bobby Reid and Aden Flint Bristol City departures were inevitable The Robins boss is excited about his new additions ahead of 2018/19 Championship season. Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson has spoken about losing Bobby Reid and Aden Flint in the summer transfer window. The Robins sold top scorer Reid to Cardiff City and talismanic defender Flint has joined Middlesbrough after offers were made that the club couldn't turn down. Johnson understands the financial model Bristol City are working with and how they have previously reinvested big transfer fees. Speaking to ITV Westcountry to promote Above & Beyond’s Bristol Heart Institute Appeal, he explained: “It’s still a business. It’s still funded by Steve Lansdown and the Lansdown family. We’re trying to run it as sustainably as possible, and that inevitably involves a trade or two. “We done it with Jonathan Kodjia but we reinvested that money not just in the first team squad but in the u23s and the academy facilities. “We’ll have more young players playing league football next year than ever before at Bristol City. “My only fear is we don’t want to be a club that’s always [focussing on] tomorrow.” Bristol City travel to Marbella for a week-long training camp and will face Real Balopédica Linense and La Liga side Rayo Vallecano during their time on the Costa del Sol. Johnson revealed he would like to manage abroad in the future, touting Barcelona as his dream job, but despite his European ambitions, the manager insists he is feeling optimistic about the new season at Ashton Gate. “Personally, I’m really excited about the season. I feel last season was progression. “I wouldn’t say our signings are fashionable signings but, for our style of play and for the way we want to work, I think they’ll really enhance us, so internally I’m just really excited to work with the group. “I think if you get the team spirit right, if you keep the energy throughout the season, and get that little bit of the rub of the green at certain times then I don’t see why we can’t be very competitive.” City started pre-season with victories over Bitton AFC and Cheltenham Town before drawing with Newport County in a behind-closed-doors game. The Robins take on Shrewsbury Town today at Ashton Gate and Johnson is enjoying putting his team through their paces. “Now is a great time because everybody comes back totally enthused, you haven’t picked a team yet, the atmosphere is fantastic.” “You lay out all your tactical principles and you see that coming to fruition in a game. “You see relationships forge, it’s exciting because you don’t know what the future holds. If you think about it in a positive manner, then you’re envisaging real success.” Johnson was speaking as he prepares for an upcoming social event being held on Thursday July 26 atAshton Gate. The event will raise money for Above & Beyond’s Bristol Heart Institute Appeal after Gary underwent surgery last year. Tickets cost from £120 per person and include a drinks receptions and a three-course meal. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/lee-johnson-explains-bobby-reid-1768270
I see LJ still has European ambitions. ' Johnson revealed he would like to manage abroad in the future, touting Barcelona as his dream job'
As nobody has commented on your thread yet wiz, I'll just stick something up about the headline subjects. Bobby Reid played a blinder last night at our first pre-season friendly - we won it 3-0 and he didn't even get on the pitch. He was there though, mingling with the local Taffs Well home fans signing autographs and chatting with them as well as the many City fans who attended. Generally getting involved - seems like a nice lad. Value for money? Well only time will tell whether him coming to us for the reported 10 mill is our loss or yours. Not sure about Flint though - maybe a Pulis type player that'll fit into his style, but I know which one I'd prefer to have. Good luck.
That's the paragraph right there. If the new signings suit LJs vision for how he wants you to play and the deals out more than balance your books then you're on to a winner. I'm sure some of our signings wouldn't have been considered fashionable, but they did the job. Reid looks like he'll fit the Warnock way so we could both be onto a winner.
'Not sure about Flint though - maybe a Pulis type player that'll fit into his style, but I know which one I'd prefer to have. Good luck'. I think you may come to a different opinion as time goes on. Can't believe we rec'd £10milliom for Bobby, great lad, technically gifted but not sure he'll replicate last season again. Reminds me of a Sunday Cup game many moons ago at Easton-in-Gordano. One of our jokers asked if we were playing in Europe.
No I agree, I couldn't believe we gave you 10 mill at the time for Reid either. Like I said, it may be our loss rather than yours - is he worth 10 mill? Who knows, only time will tell but we're glad to have that extra dimension his style of play brings to our side. If Warnock saw something in him to make such an offer to secure his services, most of us will tend to go with that. One thing's for sure, if he does "replicate last season again" or anything like it at Premier level, he'll worth 3 or 4 times what we paid you for him. As for Flint - don't really know much about him to form an informed opinion, only what I've seen on the box etc. Just a gut feeling that Pulis has gone for power over finesse again and he certainly has that. I'm not disregarding his defensive ability, but dead ball goals can win games as we demonstrated last season, so it will be interesting to see if it comes off.
Despite all the respect I have for Warnock as a manager (and foe) his record in signing players from Bristol City has not been great; Carle, Tomlin....... Maybe Reid will be different? Maybe?
Only time we tell , the other two were lazy though , Reid is definitely not , if he doesn’t make it , it won’t be for lack of effort that’s for sure .
LJ will be managing in Europe - he has achieved his goals - they are in Marbella soon! I get there in 4 weeks time sadly.
Tammy Abraham scored a load with us, then went to a side in South Wales who as predicted struggled and he’s been MIA since. His name was everywhere after his season with us, which culminated in an England cap, but a move to the wrong club can hinder you big time, who’s talking about Tammy now? Nobody that’s who!! Will Bobby be the same?
Dunno to be honest - nobody can predict that. I can see the analogy supcon, but the assumption that he'll follow the same pattern as Abraham is pure speculation. From what I've seen, Reid is the type of player we've been missing for years and could well fill a spot alongside Zohore and Hoilett - we'll just have to wait and see.
OK, Flint and Reid gone, we've discussed them, loved them and now we've got rid of them at a huge profit, pastures anew, good luck to them but history, thankyou very much, they have gone. These are Bristol City's future along side our current squad ~ Marley Watkins - age 27 - right wing. Adam Webster - age 23 - centre back. Hakeeb Adelakum - age 22 - midfield. Andreus Weinmann - age 26 - Forward. Jack Hunt - age 27 - right back. All a good age, 4 are experienced Championship players with A1 backgrounds, 1 a brilliant prospect, fantastic reputation at League 1 level, a lot of interested clubs chased him, so a good quality mix of players and may be more to follow - goalkeeper and striker. I think we have a strong, confident outlook and I am looking forward to next season with confidence.
Well said , time to move on and focus on OUR team and players , I’m sure there are a few more to come yet also COYR
Apologies for posting on your forum. Before I did so on this thread, and only because it mentioned Reid in the title, it appeared nobody else wanted to. Please carry on yourselves about your new players.
Keep posting Sparkey its only the odd few that takes exception to your posts, me I don't mind at all, livens up pre season.
Didn’t mean it like that mate , I was referring to concentrating on our players we have now rather than the ones that have moved on , it wasn’t meant to be a dig at you . Personally have no issue with anyone , if I have ide say it straight out ,
Appreciate it was nothing personal Ashton - I just replied to your post because it echoed the virtual instruction of the post above yours.
Bristol City taking close look at Fleetwood Town goalkeeper. Bristol City are taking a close look at signing Fleetwood Town’s Alex Cairns according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon. While Frank Fielding has been a solid number one for Bristol City over the last few years, the club are now looking for someone else who can be a star in between the sticks. Ever since the transfer window opened this summer, they have been looking across the country to find the man who can be their new shot stopper. And it appears that they have found the man they are looking for. They have been taking a close look at Cairns recently. The 25-year-old goalkeeper has been building a good CV for himself over the last few years. After coming through the Leeds United academy and failing to make the breakthrough there, only making one appearance, he would have spells at Rotherham United and Chesterfield but once again, struggled to get into the first team. However in the two years he has been at Fleetwood, he has shown himself to be one of the best goalkeepers in the league and it is no surprise to see eyes from the Sky Bet Championship watching him over. With Bristol City getting plenty of money for selling both Aden Flint and Bobby Reid, they would definitely have the money to wrap this deal up should they wish. However the concern would be that because Fleetwood know they have that money burning a hole in their pockets, they may drive the value up so they can get a good deal for the potential sale of Cairns. http://the72.co.uk/109710/bristol-city-taking-close-look-fleetwood-town-goalkeeper/
I see we're aiming high again.... We sell the family silver and buy second hand lower league castoffs. Maybe that's harsh on Cairns but I'd seriously like to see a proven Championship (or better) keeper brought in. It's not like we don't have any money..... As per the Cloughie ethos, the backbone of any good team is a great keeper, centre half and centre forward. At present we are 0/3 in those positions imho
