Thought it might warrant a thread of its own, with very little actual footballing news to discuss.

I think it's been overplayed somewhat by the Mail. It's his property. Giving them a rent-free period and £100 is hardly 'bullying'. Obviously I have nothing against people who rent as opposed to buying their own property, maybe they can't afford their own property, but if you choose to rent that's the risk you're taking; someone else might buy the place with new ideas.

Hmm, probably best for Beefy, to be honest. Football or no football news.

I'm going to guess that only roughly one in every three comments will actually be about Barnard wanting the tenants out.

Sounds like a case of someone just not knowing the law and not being arsed to check.

Always dodgy buying property with tenants. Says he was told they hardly needed any notice...he should have consulted a lawyer himself. Can serve them the correct notice now and it will get sorted. My brother had tenants who never paid rent and chopped up all his doors and stairs. I once had power of attorney for an old lady who needed to sell her house to pay for care...her lodger who rented one room had been her friend for years, was in work and given 3 months notice...he was extremely difficult and lost her several buyers. I reckon he wanted a pay off...got him out in the end.
However, tenants have rights...Lee should have found out what they were and complied.

Amusingly the DM described him as "Premier League star Lee Barnard".

The comments on the article on the DM website are as disproportionate as the paper itself.
I think I prefer the other sister

I agree and I think this sort of situation is quite common. I had a not dissimilar thing happen to me just over a year ago. I was renting from a foreign landlady who suddenly needed to sell the place and Foxtons (who managed the property for her) sent me a notice to quit telling me to move out in June. I called the number on the notice and quoted the section of the contract that said they couldn't make me move out until July and the guy on the phone just said "Oh yes, that's quite clear isn't it. Moving out in June isn't something that would interest you then?" I should possibly have asked what it was worth but I needed to stay there more than I needed money.

You could probably have got them to buy you out of your last month and then some, but maybe it wouldn't have been worth the hassle of finding a new place.

Sometimes owners can be reasonable. My son had to leave without the requisite notice because of work. His landlord said that if he found someone quickly he wouldn't charge my son for the extra month. He got a tenant quickly and saved my son a packet. People can be nice.

I have to say that my son has a way with people. Got a reduced price at the dentist because he said he couldn't afford the full price (which he couldn't at the time). Got £35 off a suit, shirt, tie and shoes in a shop because he said £300 was his limit. He also has no problem getting jobs as he is ace at interviews. People warm to him.

Yeah, I'd already made plans for moving in July and it would have taken a lot of money to make up for the hassle of changing things.

So the rumour that you're GMI's mum, are false then.

That is pushing the limits of slander and defamation of character to the very edge!

To be rather pedantic, that'd be libel rather than slander. But yes, it would certainly be defamatory!
